From the way we work to how we learn, covid-19 has changed our lives like never before. Even the way we speak is not left untouched. Mint puts together a glossary of terms that are now part of our daily discourse.

Super spreader: Individuals who infect disproportionately more secondary contacts as compared to others. In February, a covid-19 positive individual now widely known as “patient 31" of South Korea was widely called a super spreader for causing a rapid rise in coronavirus cases in that country.

Flattening the curve: An effort to slow the growth and prevent a spike in the disease burden. It refers to using protective practices to slow the rate of coronavirus infections so that hospitals have room, supplies and doctors for all the patients who need expert care.

Index patient: The first person infected with a disease in an epidemic.

Incubation period: The time between an individual first getting exposed to the virus and the appearance of a symptom. In the case of the coronavirus, it is generally believed to be 14 days.

Self-quarantine: An act of separating and restricting the movement of people with exposure to a contagious disease. During self-quarantine, healthcare professionals observe if the person is becoming sick or not.

Contact tracing: Identifying and monitoring people who may have exposure with an infected person. In the case of covid-19, monitoring usually involves self-quarantine as an effort to control the spread of the disease.

Social distancing: This is the deliberate practice of maintaining physical space between people to prevent the spread of the disease. Staying at least six feet away from other people reduces your chances of catching covid-19.

Furlough: It is a staffing and human resources term that means temporary leave from work that is not paid and is often for a particular period of time. It generally helps companies to not lay off, yet not bear the cost of employees for a specific period of time.

Covidiots: It is used to define people who are not following lockdown rules and are roaming around.

Zoonotic: A zoonotic disease exists in animals, but can also infect humans. WHO suggests that bats might have been a host of the novel coronavirus virus.
