Manipur Violence Highlights: We are running out of time, three months have gone, says CJI

Manipur updates: The Lok Sabha witnessed disruptions and protests by the opposition, leading to an adjournment until 2 pm. The opposition has persistently sought a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament regarding the Manipur issue.

After a two-day visit to the violence-hit state, MPs belonging to the Opposition's I.N.D.I.A bloc returned to New Delhi on Sunday.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee on Sunday urged the people of ethnic strife affected Manipur to embrace peace for the sake of humanity.

She also assured the people of the northeastern state of standing by their side.

"My heart aches deeply upon hearing the heart-wrenching stories from Manipur. Human lives should never endure the agonies of hatred's cruel experiments. Yet, in the face of silence from those in power, let us find solace in knowing that INDIA will mend wounds and rekindle the flame of humanity," Banerjee tweeted.

INDIA alliance's 21 opposition MPs has signed the document demanded urgent rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected people to bring peace and harmony to Manipur on Sunday.

There is anger and a sense of alienation amongst all communities and it has to be addressed without delay, they said.

In a memorandum submitted to Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey, the opposition leaders wrote, "We earnestly request you to restore peace and harmony taking all effective measures, where justice should be the cornerstone. In order to bring peace and harmony, rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected persons is most urgent".

"We will present authentic report on Manipur in House...": Cong MP Netam

After returning from Manipur, Congress MP Phulodevi Netam on Sunday said that they will make an authentic report of their visit to the violence-hit state and present it in the House adding that they have been demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should come to Parliament for a discussion on Manipur.

Talking about meeting the victims of sexual assault and their family members in Manipur, MP Netam said that even after the victims complained about police being present and not doing anything, the government has not yet taken any action yet adding “no one should be this shameless". (ANI)

National Spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party Sambit Patra on Sunday took a swipe at the Opposition alliance which concluded their visit to Manipur on Sunday, saying that “politics will begin again from tomorrow".

A delegation of 21 MPs from 16 parties of the Opposition bloc - the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) - reached Manipur on Saturday.

Mizoram awaits Centre's relief package for over 12,600 displaced people from Manipur

The Mizoram government is still waiting for financial assistance from the Centre for over 12,600 internally displaced people from ethnic strife-torn Manipur, a senior official said on Sunday.

Mizoram home commissioner and secretary H Lalengmawia said that Chief Minister Zoramthanga had, in May, sought 10 crore as an immediate relief package for those displaced people. (PTI)

Opposition MPs on Sunday said the people of Manipur have lost confidence in Chief Minister N Biren Singh and asked why he has not been sacked till now, as their delegation returned here after a two-day visit to the violence-hit northeastern state.

The opposition bloc INDIA on Sunday said if the conflict in Manipur is not resolved soon, it may create security problems for the whole nation.

A delegation of the non-BJP coalition, which visited Manipur state for two days from Saturday, also slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his "silence", showing "brazen indifference" to the ongoing ethnic strife in the northeastern state.

“If the conflict in Manipur is not resolved soon, it may create security problems for the entire country," Congress leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a member of the delegation, said. (PTI)

Double-engine govt in Manipur not doing anything to stop violence: Chhattisgarh CM

Reacting to the visit of the I.N.D.I.A. delegation to violence-hit Manipur and Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) criticism for it, Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel on Sunday claimed that the double-engine government is not doing anything to stop violence in the northeastern state and is looking for excuses.

Manipur: FIR against ITLF spokesman for 'promoting enmity'

The Manipur Police has registered a case against Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) spokesperson Ginza Vualzong for allegedly promoting enmity between different groups and creating public mischief, a charge denied by the organisation.

Registering a 'zero FIR' based on a complaint by a trader, the Manipur Police filed the case in Imphal sub-division under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race etc, defamation, spreading rumours and creating ill-will between two communities. Jharkhand unit of I.N.D.I.A to protest against Centre over Manipur issue on August 1

The first meeting of the Jharkhand unit of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) took place at Jharkhand Congress Headquarters here in Ranchi on Sunday.

“Political tourism”: Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on INDIA delegation’s Manipur visit

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore on Sunday hit out at the delegation of the Opposition’s Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) that visited the violence-hit Manipur calling it a “political tourism".

“Before 2014 when the UPA government was there then they did not care about it. Since then all the groups have been in conflict. BJP advocates creating new Union territories in Manipur

Kuki leader and BJP MLA Paolienlal Haokip, who shot into the limelight after ethnic violence erupted in Manipur, said the way forward to finding a solution to the state’s racial conflict is by creating three separate Union territories.

Haokip in an interview to PTI advocated giving "political and administrative recognition to the ethnic separation" in the state, upping the ante from earlier vaguely explained demands for a "separate administration" for Kuki areas made by fellow Kuki community leaders.

However, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Meitei groups led by COCOMI (Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity, an umbrella body of several Imphal-based organizations) have strongly voiced their opposition to any moves to "break up" the state, and analysts say the Central government, which is holding talks with Kuki groups - Kuki National Organisation and United Peoples Front, is also against such a formulation.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh takes a dig at Centre for 'ignoring' Manipur clashes

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took a swipe at Centre for not listening to Manipur people, affected by months-long violence. In a tweet, Ramesh wrote, "NDA Union Ministers used to visit Manipur every week and at times every other day in the run-up to the 2022 Assembly elections in the state.

Since the outbreak of ethnic violence, only the Union Home Minister has visited once, that too after a delay of more than a month… with no tangible impact to show.

Manipur viral video: Mother demands capital punishment for accused

The mother of one of the girls who was stripped naked and paraded by a mob in Manipur wants capital punishment for the culprits. The mother has also demanded to see the remains of her son and husband who too died on that day.

"The thing I want to convey is that we the tribals, the minority, we can't live with the Meitei anymore, and second, if possible I want to at least see the dead bodies of my son and husband," the mother said.

Protest against Manipur incident turns violent in Nashik

At least 10 police personnel received injuries in stone-pelting after a protest march against the sexual assault on two women in Manipur turned violent at Satana town in Maharashtra's Nashik district, officials said.

Several persons have been detained in connection with the incident which took place on Saturday evening and the situation has been brought under control, Superintendent of Police (SP) Shahaji Umap said.

The march was organised by the Eklavya Adivasi Sanghatana, a few other tribal organisations and the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi to condemn the incident in Manipur where two women were paraded naked and sexually assaulted by a mob on May 3.

Manipur violence: Here's what the delegates said after visiting relief camps

  • Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi said the delegation has identified a total of four relief camps, and after sharing the experience within the team, it will meet Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Sunday. “We have visited a total of four relief camps, two in Churachandpur, one in Imphal and one in Moirang. Everyone wants peace and everyone wants to build their lives. We will meet with our second team and share our experiences and tomorrow we will meet the Governor. We have come to Manipur to understand the expectations of the people and we will reflect that in Parliament," he said.
  • Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury appealed to Manipur CM Biren Singh to meet the affected people. “I want to appeal to Manipur CM N Biren Singh to meet people living in these relief camps. The situation on the ground is that common people are facing a lot of difficulties. We will all have to work for them," he said.
  • Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha said after visiting a relief camp in Churachandpur, that their visit is just a way to provide some "psychological healing" to the people in distress.“We met several people in the relief camp here and listened to their problems. We have assured them that there will be a change in the situation and we are all working in that direction. This is our small step in the direction of psychological healing," Jha said.
  • Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev slammed BJP and said that the Centre instead should have sent a delegation to violence-hit Manipur. “The people are terrified. There are many children as well. It was important for us to come and meet the victims here, the sad part is that the Government of India should have sent the delegation but they refused, so the I.N.D.I.A. alliance has come here," she said.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla calls for peace in Manipur

"I have been pained by whatever inhumane incidents have happened in the recent past. We are all hurt by them. The whole society, states and the entire country should tread the path of peace. We should all make efforts for the restoration of peace," Birla said.

"These incidents are very sad and pain us all. Our behaviour should not hurt anybody. This should be our effort. As a society, it is our moral duty," he said when asked about the situation in Manipur.

Manipur violence: 'Opposition trying to politicise the issue,' Union Minister says

Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal lambasted Opposition leaders who have gone to Manipur amid the clashes. He said, "We are ready for discussion in Parliament. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have also said that they want to have discussions on this (Manipur) issue, but they (The opposition) are trying to politicise the issue. This should not be done".

Amid the unrest in Mnaipur, former CM Okram Ibobi welcomed the 21 delegates from 26 political parties in Imphal. He said, "They should visit the relief camps and meet people who are out of their homes for almost 3 months now. They should inform the Govt about the situation so that normalcy is restored as early as possible. We will discuss with the members regarding our demand for the resignation of the Manipur CM N Biren".

Manipur violence: INDIA delegates to visit relief camps and talk to affected people, says RJD MP

Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Manoj Jha, who reached Imphal on Saturday along with 20 other delegates said, "There is no strategy as of now. We are divided into two groups and our only attempt is to listen to the people of Manipur. They are not being heard. We will visit several relief camps and talk to the people of the state. We will meet the Governor and have discussions".

'Instability in Manipur bad for national security,' Ex-Indian Army chief

On the ongoing Manipur crisis, former Indian Army chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane said that if there's any instability in a border state then that instability is bad for our overall national security.

"Definitely, instability does not help us in the overall national security construct and the involvement of foreign agencies not only say cannot be ruled out but I will say it is definitely there, especially Chinese aid to various insurgent groups, they've been helping them for so many years. They will continue, I believe," the former Indian Army chief added.

Manipur: CBI takes over probe of horrendous 'sexual assault' video

The CBI has taken over the investigation in a case of alleged sexual assault on two women by a mob in Manipur on May 4, a video clip of which went viral on social media platforms earlier this month.

The government had decided to hand over the case of the alleged assault to the CBI, which was already roped in to probe six cases related to violence in Manipur.

The CBI will dispatch some more women officers, besides forensic experts, to probe the case.
