Curfew has been relaxed in East and West Manipur for 7 hours from 5 am to 12 noon on 26 May. As per the directive, people can move out of their residences only to purchase essential items. including medicines and food supplies.
The order says, Total public curfew under Section 144 CrPC, 1973 prohibiting the movement of any person outside their respective residences imposed in Imphal East District vide this Office Order dated 3rd May, 2023 is hereby relaxed from 5 am to 12 noon on 26th May except for the area for which the schedule is given below in order to facilitate thegeneral public to purchase essential items including medicines and food supplies.
“…there has been an improvement in the law & order situation in the district and hence restriction of the movement of any person(s) outside their respective residence(s) is hereby lifted from 05:00 AM to 12:00 Noon of 26-05-2023 (Friday) subject to the condition that people shall not be allowed to gather for any other purposes other than procurement of essential items & office works."
All persons belonging to essential services such as Health, Electricity, PHED, Press & Electronic Media and Court, shall be exempted from further imposition of curfew after the expiry of the said period of relaxation, it adds
Fresh violence in Manipur
One person was killed and another injured in a fresh violence between suspected militants and a group of people in an area bordering Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts in strife-torn Manipur, police said on Thursday.
Toijam Chandramoni, 30, was shot dead during the violence on Wednesday, and Leichombam Abungnao, aged 22, was injured when suspected militants opened fire at the group of people, mostly comprising those who were displaced during the recent ethnic clashes in Churachandpur and took shelter in a relief camp at Moirang in Bishnupur, the officer said.
There were reports that militants late Tuesday night torched the houses of some villagers at Toronglaobi in Bishnupur district, he said.
Amit Shah to visit Manipur next week
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit violence-hit Manipur on May 29 to resolve the ongoing ethnic crisis.
Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said this at a press conference here on Thursday evening.
"Union Home Minister Amit Shah would stay for three days and would work to end the ethnic crisis and deliver justice to all the people," Rai said.
"We will talk with people at different places and listen to their views and opinions," Rai said.
