Union Home Minister Amit Shah is visiting violence stricken northeastern state of Manipur. During his visit, union minister Amit Shah said, "we are committed to restoring peace in Manipur as early as possible and ensuring return of displaced people to their homes'. Amit Shah on Wednesday took stock of the security situation with senior officials in Manipur's Moreh.

Shah said this after visiting the camps of Kuki and Meitei communities in Manipur on the third day of his ongoing visit to the ethnic violence-hit state.

"Visited a relief camp in Kangpokpi and met the Kuki community members there. We are committed to restoring peace in Manipur as early as possible and ensuring their return to their homes," he tweeted.

The home minister also said that he had convened a meeting with civil society organisations in Kangpokpi in Manipur and "they are keen to actively participate with the government in reviving harmony among communities in Manipur".

The union minister also visited relief camps of Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur.

In a tweet, Amit Shah said, "Held a meeting with the delegations of Kuki and other communities at Moreh. They expressed strong support for the government's initiatives to restore normalcy in Manipur."

"Took stock of the security situation with senior officials in Moreh (Manipur)," Shah said in another tweet.

The home minister is on a four-day visit to Manipur, the first since the ethnic clashes began on May 3.

Three-pronged approach to bolster peace in Manipur

The central government along with the Chief minister N Biren Singh-led Manipur government has taken up a three pronged approach to deal with the sporadically violent situation in Manipur, PTI reported.

The Centre is working on a three-pronged approach to bring the warring Meitei and Kuki communities into a narrow common ground for lasting peace in trouble-torn Manipur.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who is currently visiting Manipur, has given clear instructions that violence must end immediately and peace should be restored in the northeastern state as early as possible.

The government is working on a three-pronged approach to restore peace in Manipur. These include dialogue with the affected people, rehabilitating those who had to leave their homes with enhanced security and control over insurgents.

The major task before the government is to build confidence between the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Hence, the Centre is making all efforts to reach out to every segment of the society in Manipur and working to bring them into a narrow common ground for lasting peace.

Manipur violence

The state witnessed a sudden spurt in clashes and firing between militants and security forces on Sunday, after a relative lull for over a fortnight.

The death toll from clashes has gone up to 80, officials said.

The ethnic violence first broke out after a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts on May 3 to protest the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The violence was preceded by tension over the eviction of Kuki villagers from reserve forest land, which had led to a series of smaller agitations.
