The Indian Army and Assam Rifles have strengthened security measures throughout Manipur in response to recent reports of renewed violence within the state.

One person was killed and another injured in fresh violence between suspected militants and a group of people in an area bordering Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts in strife-torn Manipur, police said on Thursday.

There were reports that militants late Tuesday night torched the houses of some villagers at Toronglaobi in Bishnupur district, police said. 

Union Home Minister Amit Shah appealed to people in Manipur to maintain peace and said he will visit the state after a few days and stay there for three days.

NEET-UG to be held in Manipur on any date between June 3-5, CUET-UG from June 5-8

Medical entrance exam NEET-UG, which was postponed in Manipur in view of the law and order situation, will now be conducted on any date between June 3 and 5, the National Testing Agency (NTA) announced on Friday.

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG) for admissions to undergraduate courses will be conducted in the state from June 5 to 8 and that for admissions to postgraduate courses (CUET-PG) from June 5 to 17, the NTA said.

"The NTA has carefully reviewed the law and order situation in consultation with the state administration of Manipur and the state government has decided to offer exam centres to the candidates for NEET-UG, CUET-UG and CUET-PG," said Sadhana Parashar, senior director of NTA. (PTI)

Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande calls on Manipur Governor

Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pande along with Lt. General RP Kalita GOC-In-Chief called on Governor of Manipur Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan, Imphal on Saturday to discuss and deliberate over the current situation and future trajectory, in order to restore normalcy at the earliest, a statement said.

Owing to the internal security situation in Manipur, the State Administration had been helped by additional security forces to defuse the situation by carrying out active domination of vulnerable and fringe areas, the statement added.

Untoward incidents have been drastically reduced with frequent round-the-clock deployment of the security forces. (ANI)

Rally in Mizoram to express solidarity with Manipur tribals hit by violence

Hundreds of people took part in a rally in Mizoram's capital Aizawl on Saturday, expressing solidarity with the tribals of Manipur who have been affected by violence.

The rally was organised by the Zo Re-Unification Organisation (ZORO), which seeks the re-unification of all Zo people -- Chin-Kuki-Mizo-Zomi -- under one administrative setup.

ZORO general secretary L Ramdinliana Renthlei said Mizo youths from Mizoram will step out to defend their brethren in Manipur if they continue to face atrocities. (PTI)

Five Kangleipak Communist Party- People's War Group cadres surrender before security forces in Manipur

Persistent efforts by Assam Rifles resulted in the successful surrender by five cadres of Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP)- People's War Group in the presence of the Police on May 26 at Somsai, Ukhrul in Manipur, an official statement said on Saturday.

Assam Rifles had engaged these cadres in negotiation over a prolonged period and motivated them to surrender and join the mainstream.

The surrender will not only ensure assisting cadres to exit unlawful approaches but also to rebuild their lives for transformation and reconciliation. The cadres surrendered along with three pistols, three magazines and 19 live point 22 rounds, the statement added. (ANI)

Ethnic clashes in Manipur result in over 70 fatalities

Manipur has been marred by ethnic clashes that have tragically led to the loss of over 70 lives. The clashes primarily involve two major ethnic groups: the Meiteis, who comprise around 53 per cent of the population and primarily reside in the Imphal Valley, and the Nagas and Kukis, who makeup approximately 40 per cent of the population and are predominantly located in the hill districts.

Army chief arrives in Manipur on two-day visit to review ground situation

Army chief General Manoj Pande on Saturday arrived in Manipur to review the law and order situation as the state reported rising incidents of sporadic violence over the last few days, officials said.

Accompanied by GoC-in-C Eastern Command Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita, Gen Pande landed at the Bir Tikendrajit Imphal International Airport in the afternoon for his two-day visit to the state.

Mob storms Union Minister R K Ranjan's Imphal residence

A mob stormed the residence of Union Minister of State for External Affairs RK Ranjan Singh at Kongba in Imphal on Thursday night, officials said today.

According to officials, the incident took place at the residence of the union minister in Kongba under Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district at around 8:30 pm last night.

Upon receiving information, the Superintendant of Police Imphal East and Inspector General of Police Themthing Ngasangva Themthing rushed to the site with additional forces to further control the situation. (ANI)

Central, state governments failed to maintain law and order in Manipur: Assam TMC chief

Assam unit of Trinamool Congress on Saturday said that the BJP-led government at the Centre and the Manipur government have failed to maintain law and order situation and protect the life and property of the people in the Biren Singh-led state.

Assam TMC President Ripun Bora said that both governments have failed to protect the life and property of the people of Manipur.

"More than 70 people have died and thousands of people have been displaced in recent violence in Manipur. The BJP-led government totally failed to maintain law and order situation in the state," Ripun Bora alleged. (ANI)

Army defangs rivals in Manipur, recovering arms to bring peace

The army cordon moved in slowly as darkness set in over the village of New Keithelmanbi some 40 km from the capital Imphal, surrounded on all sides by a dense forest.

The army and Assam Rifles personnel who had swooped down on the village in Kangpokpi district on the edge of the Imphal valley on Friday, were searching for arms.

"In the last few days, we have observed that communities are attacking each other with firearms. In some cases, people are being killed … This sudden emergence of arms is delaying the entire peace process," a senior Army official told PTI.

Security forces launch operation to track insurgents

Amid the recent spurt in violence in Manipur, the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles on Saturday launched massive combing operations in sensitive flash points to track down armed insurgents.

The Indian Army said that the operation was launched in the higher reaches surrounding the Imphal Valley.

Multiple search operations were also launched in areas of Kangchuk, Motbung, Saikul, Pukhao and Sagolmang in Manipur to track down any armed insurgents operating in these areas.

Amit Shah is scheduled to visit violence-hit Manipur on May 29

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit violence-hit Manipur on May 29 to resolve the ongoing ethnic crisis.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said this at a press conference here on Thursday evening.

"Union Home Minister Amit Shah would stay for three days and would work to end the ethnic crisis and deliver justice to all the people," Rai said.

"We will talk with people at different places and listen to their views and opinions," Rai said.

The recent unrest has only impeded development, Rai said, adding there was calm and peace for the last nine years with no blockade and few bandhs.

Security personnel are deployed at 38 vulnerable areas

Chief Minister Biren Singh informed that additional security forces had been brought into the state and security personnel consisting of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), Manipur Police, Manipur Rifles, India Reserve Battalion (IRB) and Village Defence Force (VDF) had been deployed at 38 vulnerable areas on Friday, ANI reported.

The 38 locations where security personnel were deployed include Napat, Haotak, Salton Heiyaikon, Saiton Leitanpokpi, Nganukon, Salal Konjin, Phougakchao Ikhai Mamang, Torbung, Govindpur, Torbung Bunglow, Phougakchao Ikhai Maning, Phougakchao Ikhai Awang, Kwakta Maning, Terakhongshangbi, Khudekpi, Toronglaobi, oksongbung, Ngangkhalawai, Thamnapokpi, Naranseina, Sunusiphai, Phubala, Thinungei, Ningthoukhong Kha-Khunou, Ningthoukhong Macha Ebema, Upokpi, Potsangbam, Nachou, Chothe, Ngariyan Oil pump, Keinou, Irengbam Foothills, waroiching, Leimaram, Kamong, Heikrujam, Sagang Bazar and Chairel Manjil.

Security forces launch operation to track insurgents

In response to the recent increase in violence in Manipur, the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles initiated extensive search operations in critical areas to locate armed insurgents.

The operation focused on the elevated regions surrounding the Imphal Valley, according to the Indian Army.

The Eastern Army Commander to accompany the Army Chief during his two-day visit to Manipur

The Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Rana Pratap Kalita will also accompany the Army Chief during his two-day visit to the state, PTI reported.

A senior Army official told PTI that Pande and Kalita will reach Imphal from Delhi to review the ground situation on the backdrop of ongoing ethnic clashes between communities.

Abandoned cartridge packets found near bunker

As per a report by PTI, during the visit to the village, located on a hillock, the presence of bunkers and trenches were observed, which were strategically built as a safeguard against potential assaults from the neighboring community.

Empty packets of cartridges were strewn near one of the bunkers. The road from the hill above the village was completely blocked by placing logs and bushes, though the entry from the highway was still open. The force also videographed the entire exercise of search operations.

Mizoram shares a 95-km long inter-state border with Manipur

Mizoram shares a 95-km long inter-state border with Manipur. The Kuki-Mizo-Hmar- Zomi communities collectively known as Kukis or Zo Hnahthlak (Zo tribes) in Manipur share blood ties with the Mizos in Mizoram.

As per a report by PTI, the state's apex student body Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) is also closely monitoring the issue and is in talks with the government, the organisation president Lalnunmawia Pautu said.

At least 2,744 people have fled to Kolasib district near Assam border, while 2,610 people have taken shelter in Aizawl district and 2,229 in Saitual district, he said.

The Mizoram government will ensure children displaced by recent ethnic riots from Manipur are able to continue their schooling here, PTI reported citing an official.

In a letter sent to all district education officers, sub-divisional education officers and principals of state-run higher secondary schools on Wednesday, the state school education department has asked all district and school authorities to allow the displaced students to be enrolled in state-run schools and government-aided schools if they seek admission.

"The recent turmoil in Manipur has caused a large-scale influx of internally displaced children into Mizoram. It is therefore requested that all district and school authorities allow admission even if proper documentation can't be provided for the children if and when they solicit admission to schools," the letter written by education department director Lalsangliana said.

Assam Rifles establishes temporary base to ensure peace along Mizoram-Manipur border

The Assam Rifles on Friday set up a temporary base along the Mizoram-Manipur inter-state boundary to monitor the situation and maintain peace in the border area in the wake of ethnic violence in the northeastern state, the paramilitary force said in a statement.

As per a report by PTI, AR personnel interacted with village council representatives and YMA office-bearers of Khawdungsei and Khakhawn villages and explained to them the establishment of the temporary base near Tuivai Bridge.

Minister Rajkumar Ranjan Singh gheraoed by mob

A group of people tried to gherao the residence of Union Minister of State for External Affairs Rajkumar Ranjan Singh in Imphal East district claiming that the government in the strife-torn state is not doing enough to protect locals from militants belonging to another community, officials said on Friday.

At around 8 pm on Thursday the mob tried to gherao the residence of Singh in the Kongba area of the district but the security forces fired tear gas shells to disperse the mob, they said.

The minister and his family members were not present at home during the incident.

There was no report of any damage to the minister's house, the officials said.

Manipur: Mob storms Union Minister R K Ranjan's Imphal residence

A mob stormed the residence of Union Minister of State for External Affairs RK Ranjan Singh at Kongba in Imphal on Thursday night, officials said today.

According to officials, the incident took place at the residence of the union minister in Kongba under Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district at around 8:30 pm last night.

RAP personnel who were on duty at the spot resorted to tear gas shelling, according to sources who added that five blank rounds were fired to disperse the crowd.

According to sources, earlier a mob attempted to storm the residence of Manipur Forest Minister Th Bishwajit Singh's residence at Thongju Kitna Panung.

Manipur Police intervened and managed to stop the mob, police said.

Three incidents of fresh violence had been reported on Wednesday in Kadangband of Imphal West district, officials said. Security was tightened in the area after the violence, the officials added.

Curfew relaxed in parts of Manipur

Curfew has been relaxed in East and West Manipur for 7 hours from 5 am to 12 noon on 26 May. As per the directive, people can move out of their residences only to purchase essential items. including medicines and food supplies.

The order says, Total public curfew under Section 144 CrPC, 1973 prohibiting the movement of any person outside their respective residences imposed in Imphal East District vide this Office Order dated 3rd May, 2023 is hereby relaxed from 5 am to 12 noon on 26th May except for the area for which the schedule is given below in order to facilitate thegeneral public to purchase essential items including medicines and food supplies. Amit Shah urges people in Manipur to maintain peace

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday appealed to people in Manipur to maintain peace and said he will visit the state after a few days and stay there for three days.

He said justice will be done with everyone in the state.

"There were clashes in Manipur after verdict of a court. I would appeal to both groups they should maintain peace, justice will be done with everyone. I will myself go to Manipur after few days and will stay there for three days and will talk to people of Manipur for establishing peace," Amit Shah said
