PM Modi leads nation in paying last respects to Manohar Parrikar

Parrikar, a former defence minister, given a state funeral

    Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday led the nation in paying last respects to senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar who passed away on Sunday evening at Panjim in Goa. The union government had declared a national mourning on Parrikar's death and Goa wore a rare sombre look with all commercial and educational institutions staying closed. Parrikar, a former defence minister, was given a state funeral.

    Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, and a host of senior BJP leaders and union ministers as well as representatives from several political parties and thousands of people bid adieu to one of Goa's most illustrious and popular leaders at Miramar in Panjim on Monday. Several political workers and people came from the adjoining Karnataka and Maharashtra.

    Parrikar's mortal remains were kept at the BJP main office in Panaji earlier in the day. Later, the four-time Goa chief minister and former defencse minister's mortal remains were taken to the Kala Academy for people to offer their tributes. Thousands of people turned up to catch the last glimpse of the popular politician who stood for his simplicity in public life. The funeral procession began from the Kala Academy at around 5 pm for the Miramar beach. 

    Parrikar died on Sunday evening after a spirited battle against pancreatic cancer for more than a year.

    The funeral procession and last rites were planned by Parrikar's family, including his sons Utpal and Abhijat, the Goa BJP, and Government of Goa, in keeping with Parrikar's towering stature and popularity.
