Maruti Suzuki February domestic sales down 1.6% YoY

Sales of compact hatchbacks last month dropped by 4% YoY to 69,828 units owing to transition to BS-VI norms

    Mumbai: Maruti Suzuki India Ltd reported a 1.6% year-on-year (YoY) decline in total domestic sales for February to 136,849 units due to continued weakness in demand and transition to BS-VI emission norms.

    The auto major's total domestic sales include domestic passenger vehicles, Super Carry light commercial vehicles (LCVs) and premium hatchbacks to Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd. Domestic passenger vehicle sales were at 133,702 units in February, down 2.3% year-on-year.

    The company reported Super Carry LCV sales of 448 units last month, down 80% YoY. It also sold 2,699 units of Baleno to Toyota, which sells the rebadged version of the same as Glanza hatchback.

    Maruti Suzuki posted a growth of 11% in its entry-level car category or mini segment, where it sells Alto and S-Presso models. The company's mini car sales were at 27,499 units during February compared with 25,885 units sold in January.

    However, sales of compact hatchbacks last month dropped by 4% YoY to 69,828 units owing to transition to BS-VI norms. On a month-on-month basis, the sales of these hatchbacks fell a sharp 17%. In January, the car maker had sold 84,340 units of compact hatchbacks. Maruti sells New Wagon R, Swift, Baleno, Ignis, Celerio and Dzire under this category.

    Maruti increased the production of its mid-sized sedan Ciaz last month compared to that in January due to the newly-launched BS-VI-compliant petrol model. Ciaz's sales in February declined 17.5% YoY to 2,544 units.

    The company's utility vehicle (UV) segment, where it sells models such as Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, XL6 and Ertiga, recorded sales of 22,604 units in February over 21,834 units sold in the year-ago period.

    Maruti last week had launched 1.5-liter petrol variant of its popular compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) Vitara Brezza, complied with BS-VI norms and starting at 7.35 lakh.

    Sales of van Eeco were at 11,227 units during February, down 23% YoY.

    Maruti Suzuki’s total exports rose 7% year-on-year to 10,261 units in February. The auto company’s overall sales, including domestic and exports, were at 147,110 units, down 1.1% from a year-ago period.
