NEW DELHI : A day after their invitation was withdrawn, Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, who also holds the education portfolio said that it was a matter of great pride that the First Lady was visiting a Delhi government school to attend a happiness class.

Sisodia's statement comes as US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have left Washington for a two-day trip to India. On their second day, Melania Trump is set to attend a happiness class which was started by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Delhi government.

"It is a matter of great pride for Delhi Government, Delhi government teachers and students that first lady Melania Trump is visiting a Delhi Government school. It is a big appreciation for us that the work of AAP government in education sector, especially Happiness classes, is being recognised in the world," Sisodia said in a statement.

The statement said that Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and Sisodia would have loved to personally receive the First Lady in the Delhi Government school and brief her about the concept of happiness classes and the positive impact that it has had on students, during her visit to the classrooms.

At the time of the announcement, there was a likelihood that both Kejriwal and Sisodia will receive the First Lady.

"However, certain concerns were expressed by US embassy regarding CM and Deputy CM accompanying Hon’ble first lady during the school visit. We respect the same. We welcome first lady whole heartedly and will do our best to facilitate the tour," the statement added.

The AAP had started the happiness curriculum in 2018. As part of the class, students till Class VIII are taught various activities, including meditation, street plays, basic obedience, and other activities. The course, which has no written examination, was started to reduce stress among students.

On First Lady’s visit to a Delhi govt school, US embassy in India said, “While US Embassy had no objection to the presence of CM & Deputy CM, we appreciate their recognition that this isn't a political event & that it's best to ensure focus is on education, school, & students".
