The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in India rose 17 percent since yesterday to 657, the latest data from the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) shows. This is a faster increase compared to the previous 24-hour-period, when the number of cases had risen 14 percent to 562.

India’s trajectory is still very close to that of the US, which is fast becoming a global epicentre of Covid-19, as the Trump-led administration struggles to contain its spread.

India’s case count has doubled over the past four days. If this trajectory continues, the number of cases could shoot up to a thousand cases in the next two days.

At 120, Maharashtra leads in terms of the number of active cases of Covid-19. Active cases exclude deaths and recoveries from the list of confirmed cases. Kerala has the second most number of active cases (114), followed by Telangana (40).

In the north-east, two states have reported cases so far: Manipur and Mizoram, with 1 confirmed case each in both states. Other north-eastern states have not reported any case so far. Jharkhand hasn’t reported any confirmed case either.

Maharashtra, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu have seen the biggest spikes in confirmed cases over the past 24 hours. The number of confirmed cases rose from 99 to 120 in Maharashtra and from 105 to 114 in Kerala.

So far, the district wise details are available only for 492 confirmed cases. In this list, Kasargod district (39 cases) has reported the most number of cases in Kerala. Pune (27 cases) has reported the most number of cases in Maharashtra and Bengaluru Urban district (18 cases) has reported the most number of cases in Karnataka, the latest district wise update published by the health ministry shows.

More than four hundred thousand people have now been infected with Covid-19 globally even as the world struggles to contain the pandemic and find a cure. So far, 21,308 people have succumbed to the disease, with Italy accounting for the most deaths (7,503), followed by Spain (3,647), which has now overtaken China (3,291) in the number of deaths.

Europe and the US have emerged as new hotspots for Covid-19, which originated in China. The US has reported 69,194 confirmed cases so far, and 1,050 deaths but these numbers are expected to spike as the US has lagged behind other countries in testing.

In India, there have only been 13 deaths so far but this could change in the coming weeks. Testing criteria in India have been stringent so far and are gradually being relaxed in the country even as new labs begin testing. It is likely that cases will continue to mount over the coming days as testing expands, even if the lockdown mitigates the extent of the spread.
