NEW DELHI : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the only mission and resolve before India now is to win the war against the novel coronavirus, and it is going to be a long battle.

Addressing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers on the party’s 40th foundation day by live video, Modi said: “We are aware that the fight against the coronavirus pandemic will be long and we do not have time to rest or get tired. There is only one mission before the country today, there is only one resolve, and that is to win the war against coronavirus."

The sacrifices of several generations of workers have led to the rise of the BJP from just two Lok Sabha members in 1984 to over 300 MPs now, Modi said, adding that the day will inspire party workers to continue with the good work.

“This foundation day of the BJP has come at a time when not only the country, but also the world is going through a difficult time. Humanity is facing a crisis. Our devotion to the country creates our path during this challenging time." Modi said every party worker should take more responsibility to fight the pandemic.

Modi said India realized the magnitude of the disease early, with both the central and state governments taking the right steps at the right time to fight covid-19, and had set an example for the world in tackling the pandemic.

The government has taken several decisions and all decisions were taken with expert advice—to stop people coming from abroad, evacuation of Indians, or the steps for medical preparedness.

“India has worked rapidly with a holistic approach that is being appreciated not only by Indians, but also WHO (World Health Organization)," Modi added.

Modi also asked BJP workers to fulfill five tasks on the 40th foundation day, including ensuring food and shelter for the poor, and to motivate people to donate to the PM CARES initiative. “I want to request all BJP workers to fulfil five tasks. The tasks are to ensure that no poor should sleep hungry, the second task is to honour front line warriors against the pandemic such as nurses and doctors, the police, essential services and cleaning staff. We should identify these people at the booth level and give them letters of appreciation."

He also urged them to wear masks and maintain social distancing while serving the people. Apart from these tasks, Modi also asked BJP workers to donate funds for PM CARES.

“Our mothers and sisters have often contributed wherever war has happened in the country. It is my request to all BJP workers to convince at least 40 people to contribute to the fund which will be used for the financially weaker section. BJP workers should also convince at least 40 people to download Aarogya Setu App which will help people get latest information about coronavirus," Modi said.

Modi commended the country for heeding his appeal to light a lamp on Sunday to show solidarity. “People from every section of the society and age group demonstrated unity and strengthened the resolve in the fight against covid-19. The maturity shown by the people during lockdown, in a large country like India, is unprecedented. No one could have imagined that the people will abide by this with such discipline and sense of service."
