Modi says healthcare scheme Ayushman Bharat has benefited 5 million

PremiumMumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday tweeted that Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest health insurance scheme, had so far benefited 5 million people. The scheme aims to provide easy access to medical facilities to over 107 million poor in the country. Modi had launched the scheme on 23 September last year at Ranchi in Jharkhand.
“An important milestone in the journey of creating a healthy India! It would make every Indian proud that in a year, over 50 lakh citizens have benefited from free of cost treatment thanks to Ayushman Bharat. Apart from curing, this scheme is empowering several Indians," Modi said in a post on microblogging site Twitter.
Under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya (PM-JAY), 16,085 hospitals have been empanelled and over 10 crore e-cards issued. Nearly 17,150 health and wellness centres have become operational across the country under the scheme. India’s flagship healthcare scheme provides a cover of ₹500,000 per family per year to over 107 million poor and vulnerable individuals in the country.
Just last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) came on board to provide technical support to the government for Ayushman Bharat.
Under the WHO-India Cooperation Strategy 2019–2023 announced on 9 September, the apex health agency will support the central and some state governments in implementing and scaling up the government’s newly established and planned initiatives and programmes. As AB-PMJAY aims to provide Universal Health Coverage (UHC), the WHO under its strategy will help in accelerating the progress on the front.
