The southwest monsoon is knocking on the doors of some parts of South India while North-East India is already enjoying intense showers. The residents of Maharashtra and its capital Mumbai are still waiting for the monsoon showers. The region is witnessing some loud thunders and storms, indicating that the showers are close. The residents of Goa were surprised by the sudden arrival of monsoon and many took a sigh of relief from the scorching heat.

The arrival of monsoon in Goa is another positive development for Mumbai and the residents can expect showers anytime now. But, officially according to the forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the region of Maharashtra can receive monsoon rainfall by 11 June.

"There is no delay in the progress of the monsoon. It is likely to reach Maharashtra in the next two days, and cover Mumbai in the subsequent two days" senior IMD scientist R K Jenamani said on Thursday.

As of Saturday, the southwest monsoon is completely over the states of Kerala, Goa, and North East. The monsoon has also touched some areas of southern Andhra Pradesh, southern Karnataka, and most parts of Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Sikkim.

In the next 48 hours, the monsoon is expected to cover the entire state of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.

Post-May 10, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) declares the onset of the monsoon season when at least 60% of the weather stations in a particular state report rainfall of 2.5 mm or higher continuously for two consecutive days. Additionally, specific criteria related to wind field and outgoing longwave radiation must be fulfilled simultaneously with this significant increase in rainfall activity.
