Monsoon LIVE News: Thousands displaced in Delhi as Yamuna breaches 45-year record

Weather Update: Parts of Delhi may witness light to moderate downpour on Wednesday and intermittent rains are predicted over the next four to five days, IMD said.  Delhi: Thousands forced to leave homes as Yamuna level breaches 45-yr record of 207.49m

Monsoon Rain: Heavy rain persisted in various parts of the country including Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana. In Delhi, CM Arvind Kejriwal called for a meeting with all ministers, officers and mayor over the situation in the national capital due to incessant rainfall. As per Atul Garg, Delhi Fire Service, a total of total 13 incidents of house collapse were reported in the national capital.

Meanwhile, IMD issued a red alert for several districts of Himachal Pradesh and an orange alert for three districts for the next 48 hours as the state continued to receive heavy rainfall. IMD has also issued alerts for flash floods, landslides in the state.

Yamuna water level rises due to heavy rains in hilly areas

Delhi rain update: The water level of Yamuna suddenly rose again owing to heavy rains in the anchor catchment area on Tuesday. Three lakh 59 thousand cusecs of water was released from Hathni Kund barrage into Yamuna on Tuesday noon.

Due to the heavy rains in the hilly areas, all the river drains coming out of the hilly areas are running above the danger mark. The water level of the Pathrala river, Som river and other hilly rivers in Yamunanagar has increased all of a sudden thereby leading to increase in water level of the Yamuna as well.

Since all the gates of Hathini Kund Barrage was open, the water will reach Delhi in the next 72 hours. High alert has been issued by the administration as water level is likely to rise.

Rain-battered north India counts its losses, rescue efforts gather pace

Rainfall in north India subsided on Tuesday following three consecutive days of heavy rain, exposing the magnitude of loss and devastation. Officials confirmed an additional 20 deaths and intensified their relief and rescue operations.

The total number of fatalities rose to 31 in Himachal Pradesh, which had previously reported 18 deaths by Monday. Uttarakhand, situated nearby, recorded five deaths. Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan each reported one death resulting from rain-related incidents.

Rain-battered north India counts its losses, rescue efforts gather pace

The intensity of rainfall varied across different regions in northern India. While the rain subsided in certain areas, it poured heavily in others. This resulted in at least seven more fatalities and left hundreds of people stranded as the raging waters swept through villages, towns, and fields. The affected regions stretched from the desert state of Rajasthan to the hills of Himachal Pradesh.

To address the dire situation caused by the continuous downpour over the past three days, state governments intensified their efforts in providing relief and conducting rescue operations in the affected districts. They had to navigate through the aftermath of destruction left in the wake of the incessant rainfall.

Among the recent fatalities, four were reported in Uttarakhand, while the remaining occurred in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Punjab. These numbers add to the previously reported 37 deaths until Monday.

"Every year during monsoon time here, we have to face natural calamities. There are landslides due to excessive precipitation, and the water level of the rivers increases. We are in full alert mode. All the officials of the district administration and those in our disaster management are doing their work. All of them have been asked to stay in alert mode to face any situation. Our other organizations are also working on this. 4 dead, 10 injured due to falling debris on Gangotri National Highway in Uttarakhand

According to the authorities, on Tuesday, a tragic incident occurred near Gangnani in Uttarakhand where four individuals lost their lives and ten individuals sustained injuries as a result of debris falling on Gangotri National Highway.

"Four people have died due to falling debris. 10 passengers who were injured have been admitted to CSC Bhatwadi for treatment", the police said.

IAF chopper requisitioned to airlift tourists stranded at Chandertal in Himachal Pradesh

A helicopter belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been requested to transport the stranded tourists at Chandertal in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh. Additionally, a rescue team from Kaza has reached Kunzum Top and is merely eight kilometers away from the lake. Heavy rain and snowfall in the area have led to approximately 300 individuals, predominantly tourists, being trapped in camps situated at an elevation of 14,100 feet in Chandertal.

"Two of them were facing breathing issues due to the high altitude and they would be airlifted," Principal Secretary, Revenue, Onkar Chand Sharma said

Rajasthan rain update: Heavy downpour in many parts of state today, one killed

Rajasthan rain update: Heavy to very rainfall was recorded in isolated parts of Rajasthan on Tuesday. Heavy downpour resulted in one death in Pratapgarh district, officials told PTI on Tuesday.

Highest rainfall was recorded in Shivganj in Sirohi. It rained 13-centimetre downpour in a 24-hour period ending on Tuesday morning, they said.

Light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places in the eastern part of the state and at isolated places in the western part during the same period, the officials added.

Delhi: Orange alert sounded as Yamuna flows over danger mark at 206.04 mm

The water level of the Yamuna, which breached the danger mark of 205.33 metres earlier on Monday, was recorded at 206.04 mm at 11 pm, triggering an Orange alert, according to data shared by the Flood Control Department in the national capital.

According to the flood bulletin, the water level of the Yamuna at the Old Railway Bridge was recorded at 206.04 mm at 11 pm.

With the Yamuna water rising, people residing on the floodplain and along the banks, in the Mayur Vihar Extension area of the national capital, started shifting to roads, according to sources.

Officials said the evacuation of people living on the Yamuna floodplains begins at the 'Orange alert' mark, which is at 206 metres.

It is anticipated that the water level would reach 206.65 metres at 3 am on Tuesday, officials informed further.

Three killed in rain-triggered roof collapse incidents in UP

Three people were killed and as many seriously injured in incidents of roof collapse following heavy rainfall in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur and Badaun districts while continued showers disrupted normal life in different districts of the state on Monday.

The Met office here said south-west monsoon remained active over western region and normal over eastern districts resulting in light to moderate rain/thundershowers accompanied with thunderstorm and lightning at a few places over east UP and most places in western part of the state.

Heavy to very heavy rain occurred at isolated places over western areas, it said.

Heavy rains batter north India; Army, NDRF teams step in for rescue ops

Incessant rains played havoc for the third consecutive day on Monday in parts of north India, particularly Himachal Pradesh where landslides claimed four more lives even as the Army and NDRF teams stepped in to intensify the relief and rescue operations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with chief ministers of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand about the situation and assured them of all help and support from the central government.

Modi also spoke with senior ministers and officials and took stock of the situation in the wake of excessive rainfall in parts of the country, his office said.

Himachal Pradesh CM chairs SDMA meeting

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu chaired a comprehensive meeting of the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) to evaluate the current situation. As of now, the state has witnessed the unfortunate demise of 17 individuals. The initial assessment of the damages incurred is estimated to be between 3000 crore and 4000 crore, as informed by the Chief Minister.

In an effort to aid the approximately 300 stranded tourists and residents in Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts, evacuation operations will be initiated using helicopters once the weather conditions improve, as stated by CM Sukhu. Due to six reported fatalities during the Shrikhand Mahadev Yatra, authorities have made the decision to suspend the pilgrimage for the remainder of the season.
