Monsoon tracker: India Metrological Department (IMD) has said that monsoon is expected to make an onset in Bihar on June 13-14 while dry weather will continue in the state in the next five days.

IMD scientist Ashish Kumar told news agency ANI, “Dry weather will continue in the state for the next 5 days as there is no possibility of rain. The temperature is likely to go past 40 degrees Celsius. Monsoon may enter Bihar by June 13-14. This time, the state is likely to receive less rainfall than normal."

Earlier, the weather office had said that monsoon is expected to make onset in Kerala on June 4 and that it will most likely be normal this year. "We are expecting the monsoon to arrive in Kerala around June 4. Before June 1, we are not expecting the monsoon to arrive. Monsoon is most likely to be normal this year," IMD said.

The southwest monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala and is an important indicator characterizing the transition from a hot and dry season to a rainy season. Indian farms rely heavily on monsoon rainfall, with 56 percent of the net cultivated area and accounting for 44 percent of food production being rain-fed. Normal rainfall leads to robust crop production, helping keep a lid on food prices, especially vegetables.

For the month of June, it said that the rainfall all over India in the month of June will remain 'Below normal' levels adding that states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Odisha, and northern India will witness above normal temperatures. June is seen to be drier in most of the regions except the south peninsula and northeastern areas, IMD said. June accounts for 16-17% of monsoon rainfall, and farmers sow kharif crops after the first rainfall spell

While speaking to ANI, RK Jenamani, a weather scientist with IMD, said, "In June, the rainfall all over India will be below 92 per cent, which is below normal. In states like Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Orissa, and northern India the temperature is likely to stay above normal and the probability of temperature to be above normal is 70-80 per cent."

Orange alert issued for Uttarakhand

After continuous rainfall in Uttarkashi since Tuesday night, the State Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for today and a yellow alert for June 1, officials told ANI.

Rainfall in Delhi today

Today, Delhi witnessed rainy morning as the weather department issued a 'yellow' alert and warned of traffic disruptions and inundation of low-lying areas due to rains. Partly cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers are expected during the day. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, the overall Air Quality Index (AQI) at 9 am stood at 99 (satisfactory).

Kerala to conduct monsoon preparedness activities

With the predictions of monsoon around June 4 in Kerala, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan directed the state officials to carry out the monsoon preparedness activities vigorously. CM Vijayan instructed that in case of heavy rains, the possibility of waterlogging in urban areas should be foreseen and the drainage systems should be cleaned and the activities to facilitate the flow of water should be completed. The cities of Kochi, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram are prone to severe waterlogging in case of heavy rainfall. IMD has predicted heavy rainfall very likely at isolated places over Kerala during 30th May-03rd June.

Forecast for next 5 days

Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm, lightning and occasional gusty winds/squall (40-50 gusting to 60 kmph) very likely over Northwest India till 1st June and will decrease thereafter.

Hailstorm very likely at isolated places over Rajasthan on 30th May, Himachal Pradesh during 30th May-01st June and over Uttarakhand during 30th May-02nd June.

Light/moderate fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorm/lightning/gusty winds very likely over Kerala, Lakshadweep and scattered rainfall over South Interior Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh during next 5 days.
