New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to form a committee to inquire into the incidents of police action on students protesting against the citizenship act, and asked all petitioners to approach the high court for redressal of their grievances.

The bench, headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde, was hearing various pleas filed against violence that took place at Jamia Milia Islamia and the Aligarh Muslim University on Sunday.

"We are confident that the Chief Justices of various high courts will call upon for inquiry, if needed, while appointing a committee including a former judge of the apex court or high court after hearing the union of India and respective states," the bench, which also included Justice BR Gavai and Justice Suryakant, said.

Students from several universities across the country have come out in solidarity with their peers at the national capital’s Jamia Millia Islamia, who saw themselves at the receiving end of the Delhi Police while protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). The students’ agitation that started at Jamia has now spread to around 20 universities, including Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, and Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, amid fears that the nationwide unrest could hurt investor sentiment.

A plea was moved in Delhi high court on Monday against police action on protesting students at the Jamia Millia Islamia University. It was mentioned earlier in the day but the court said it would not hear it on urgent basis and the petitioner should come through its registry.

The petition said, on 15 December, when students and members of the teachers' association of the university were observing a peaceful protest, the police broke into the campus, used tear gas and lathi-charged the protestors. The plea sought judicial inquiry into the incident and compensation to the injured students.
