Business News/ News / India/  Mukhtar Ansari convicted in 1991 Awadhesh Rai murder case

A Varanasi court on Monday convicted gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari in the Congress leader Awadhesh Rai murder case. Rai was shot dead on August 3, 1991, at the gate of his Lahurabir residence. A case in the matter was registered against Mukhtar Ansari and others.

Speaking to media persons in Varanasi, a lawyer said, “Mukhtar has been convicted in the Awadhesh Rai murder case of 1991. The court will pronounce its judgment later in the day."

Congress leader Ajay Rai, Awadhesh Rai's brother reacted to the development and said that this is the end of their many years of waiting in the case, according to a report published by PTI.

"I, my parents, Awadhesh's daughter and the whole family kept patience... Governments came and went and Mukhtar strengthened himself. But we did not give up. Because of our lawyers' efforts, today the court has found Mukhtar guilty in the murder case of my brother," he added.

Earlier, the Special Court concluded the hearing after arguments on May 19, reserved its order, and fixed June 5 as the date to deliver it

In this case, Ajay Rai had named Mukhtar Ansari, Bhim Singh and former MLA Abdul Kalim, in the FIR, ANI reported.

On May 17, a Ghazipur MP/MLA Court acquitted Mukhtar Ansari accused in a case of conspiracy of a murder attempt in Uttar Pradesh's Mohammadabad area in the district.

In 2009, Mir Hasan filed a case of attempt to murder against Mukhtar Ansari under 120B. A case under section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Ansari at Mohammadabad police station in Ghazipur.

In April this year, the same court had sentenced the gangster-politician and his brother and BSP MP Afzal Ansari to imprisonment for 10 years and four years, respectively in a 2007 Gangsters Act case.

Mukhtar had been an MLA for five consecutive terms from the Mau Sadar assembly seat.

The gangster-politician did not contest the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections and his seat was won by his son Abbas Ansari from the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP).
