Mumbai airport: Flights may be affected till tomorrow to restore main runway

After a SpiceJet flight from Jaipur skidded and overshot the main runway at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport due to heavy rains last night, flight services at the airport may remain affected till tomorrow.

In a tweet, airport authorities said currently the secondary runway is in use. "Due to runway excursion by the arriving aircraft, main runway is not available & secondary runway is put in use," airport authorities said.

It said their team is trying its best to bring the main runway back in operation and this may take upto 48 hours.

Asking all passengers flying in and out of the Mumbai airport, the authorities said flight delays are expected and one must check with airline before reaching the airport.

Since the incident happened last night, around 54 flights were diverted to other airports such as Ahmedabad and Bengaluru while 52 flights have been cancelled so far.

IndiGo, Vistara and GoAir said it is waiving off cancellation charges and change fee to passengers travelling to and fro Mumbai till tomorrow. Air India said it has waived off charges till midnight tomorrow.

"Due to inclement weather & apt runway closure at Mumbai-resulting in inconvenience to pax #Airindia has waived off all charges for rescheduling/no-show/cancellation of bookings on flts to/from BOM with scheduled departure from 2345hrs of 1st July till midnight 2nd July'19," Air India said in a tweet.

SpiceJet, on the other hand, is offering a full waiver on cancellation and date change charges for travel to and from Mumbai for 2nd and 3rd July.
