Multiple areas of Mumbai, including the upscale neighbourhood of Bandra and Khar and Santacruz suburbs, were affected by power outages on the night of May 10. The reason for the power cut was due to a technical snag in the power distribution system.

As a result, the power supply was disrupted in the western suburbs of the city. Officials have informed HT that it will take some more time to restore power.

Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd apologised for the inconvenience caused to its customers and attributed the disruption to cable faults.

“The interruption due to cable faults was restored to a majority of customers within 30 minutes by tireless efforts of our power warriors. Due care was taken to ensure no interruption is faced by critical establishments," said an Adani Electricity Mumbai Ltd spokesperson.

This is not the first time that Mumbai has been hit by power cuts. In April 2022, there were electricity supply disruptions in Mumbai and neighbouring areas such as Thane, Mulund, Ambarnath, Badlapur and Dombivali due to a tripping in the 400KV substation at Padgha. The power supply was restored slowly after a small explosion at the station.

The May 2023 power outage came amid a series of power supply disruptions faced by Mumbai due to a severe shortage of electricity that forced the state discom MSEDCL to initiate load-shedding in various parts of Maharashtra.

The suburbs of Bandra, Santa Cruz, Khar, Kurla and Chembur, and Dadar in central Mumbai, were affected by the power outage that lasted for over 15 minutes. Additionally, parts of Wadala, Sion and Dharavi reported power outages.

According to government data and internal documents examined by Reuters, India's inability to add new coal-fired and hydropower capacity on time may restrict its ability to meet the soaring demand for electricity when solar energy is not accessible, making it more susceptible to nighttime power cuts this summer and in the future.

a rapid increase in solar farms, the country may face widespread blackouts at night due to a lack of coal-fired and hydropower capacity.
