Business News/ News / India/  Mumbai likely to receive heavy rainfall on THESE dates as Cyclone Biparjoy inches closer
Back

Mumbai is bracing for heavy rainfall as the low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, which has been named Cyclone Biparjoy in Bangladesh. The Indian Metrological Department (IMD) said that the Mumbai and Konkan regions are expected to receive rainfall till 12 June.

The city of Mumbai is expected to witness strong winds and high waves along its coast and scattered rains are expected all over Maharashtra with Mumbai and Pune likely to receive some intense rainfall from 8 to 10 June.

The weather department said that the depression in the Arabian sea is currently 920 km west-southwest of Goa and 1,120 km south-southwest of Mumbai. It is likely to move northwards in the next 24 hours.

"It is likely to move nearly northwards and intensify into a cyclonic storm during the next 24 hours over east-central Arabian Sea and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea," the IMD said.

The developments in the Arabian Sea are also expected to disturb the onset of monsoon in Kerala, which is expected by 8 or 9 June in Kerala.

"These powerful weather systems in the Arabian Sea spoil the advancement of the monsoon deep inland. Under their influence, the monsoon stream may reach coastal parts but will struggle to penetrate beyond the Western Ghats," private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather told news agency PTI.

Skymet Weather stated that there will be a notable increase in rainfall along the Western Coast of India, spanning from Kerala to Maharashtra. The cyclone will facilitate the timely arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai. Between June 8 and 10, the sea conditions will be turbulent to extremely turbulent along the coasts of Karnataka and Maharashtra. Similarly, from June 9 to 12, the sea conditions will be rough along the Gujarat coast.
