Mumbai local trains: From higher frequency, more coaches to AC trains on all days

PremiumMumbai’s local train services are the most preferred mode of communication by the Mumbaikars. The local train services or the suburban train services therefore are aptly known as the ‘lifeline’ of India’s financial capital.
As 2019 is comes to an end and we step forward towards 2020, let’s take a look on some of the major changes that have been made by the Indian Railways on the local train services in Mumbai for the betterment of travel experience of lakhs of railway passengers.
The local train services are maintained by the Central and Western Railway zones of Indian Railways.
The Western Railway Zone of Indian Railways started the air conditioned services were extended for Saturdays & Sundays from 14 September, 2019.Earlier the AC local in Mumbai used to run five days a week.
The state-of-the-art ‘Uttam Rake’ with improved interiors and advanced mechanism was started on 05 November. The local train is now has features which have helped in making travel in local trains a better experience for the Mumbaikars.
The Central Railway zone has increased 15-car services from 16 to 22 daily thereby creating 25% more accommodation.
In 2019 the Parel Terminus was also commissioned. The suburban services of 38 Dadar services have been extended up to Parel. The total number of services on Harbour line 614 daily.
The total services on Trans-harbour line are 262 daily. Central Railway Zone also increased the total services on main line from 856 to 858 daily. Total suburban services on Central Railway increased from 1772 to 1774 daily.
Western Railway zone has also commissioned 24 new Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) in Mumbai suburban section taking the total to 119 FOBs from 95.
Advance Suburban Trains Indicators
Central Railway zone has also installed big screen indicators at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus(CSMT) suburban station and is going to install the same on prominent suburban stations which will give departure time of 30 upcoming local trains.
Earlier advance train indicator for showing information for next five suburban trains for main line and harbour line were provided separately in suburban area at CSMT.
The Western Railway zone has installed CCTV cameras in 45 rakes covering ladies coaches of EMU rakes.
1096 CCTV cameras have been installed at important stations over Western Railway zone in suburban section for surveillance.
Solar mobile charging kiosks installed at 15 suburban stations of Western Railway.
