A Mumbai-based man was detained on Sunday for using an image of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb as his WhatsApp profile picture. An FIR was registered after the issue was raised by a Hindu organisation. The man was later released and a notice was issued to him.
The police had registered a case under IPC sections 298 (uttering words, etc, with deliberate intent to wound religious feelings) and 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence).
Further investigation is underway.
The developments came against the backdrop of communal tensions in various parts of Maharashtra, spurred by the alleged glorification of Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan. Last week locals in Kolkapur had indulged in stone pelting over the same. Tensions arose after some youths allegedly posted objectionable posts on social media with a reference to Aurangzeb and Tipu Sultan.
In Kolhapur city, protesters pelted stones during a demonstration against the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image along with an objectionable audio message as social media “status” by a few locals on Wednesday.
“A monument of Tipu Sultan was built here on the main road, there was no permission for it. We got information that it is an illegal monument. We had a meeting to remove it after which it was removed. There is peace in the area,” the Dhule SP was quoted as saying by ANI on Friday.
Photos of Aurangzeb had also reportedly been displayed during a procession in Ahmednagar some time earlier.
A poster of the Mughal ruler had also been displayed alongside the raising of objectionable slogans during a religious procession in Sangamner. Two persons were injured and five vehicles were damaged after stone pelting in the area during a rally of Sakal Hindu Samaj in response to the alleged murder of a boy.
