Mumbai: City Mayor and BJP leader Ritu Tawde has drawn attention after claiming that a long-standing throat ailment was cured through the blessings of a “gurudev”, after medical treatment failed to provide relief — an outcome she described as a “miracle”.

Speaking at a public event in Borivali on Tuesday, Tawde said she had been dealing with the issue for nearly two years despite undergoing treatment, news agency PTI reported.

“My voice was not like this. I told Param Gurudev ji that I was taking medicines, but nothing was helping. I am in shock,” she said.

Tawde, who was elected as Mumbai’s 78th mayor in February, was referring to a Jain priest. She added that her condition improved significantly after receiving his blessings.

“He blessed me, and today I can speak in front of you… This truly feels like a miracle because I was in great distress. But you can hear my voice now,” she said.

Reacting to her remarks, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut took a swipe, saying people are free to believe in such claims, while drawing a comparison to self-styled godman Ashok Kharat, who has been arrested over allegations of sexual assault.

At the same event, Maharashtra minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha said Tawde’s political journey was also linked to the blessings of the gurudev. He added that BJP leader Amit Satam had described her rise to the mayor’s post as another “miracle”, alongside support from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union minister Amit Shah.
