Mumbai news: Fire breaks out at Terminal 1 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport

Mumbai news: A fire broke out at Terminal 1 of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on Thursday due to a short circuit.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, and no casualties had been reported, a civic official told PTI.

According to the official, the blaze started at a three-storey building near 1-B Circle at around 6:35 PM, following which teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade were dispatched to the scene. The fire was limited to the ground floor, he added.

A CSMIA spokesperson said the blaze had not affected the operations of the airport. “On Thursday, 09 April 2026, a minor fire was reported at Terminal 1 due to a short circuit at 18:10 hrs. The fire was immediately brought under control by the emergency response teams within minutes. Airport operations remain unaffected,” the spokesperson said in an official statement

Chief fire officer of the Mumbai fire brigade, Ravindra Ambulgekar, said the fire was reported in cable trays and switch boxes within the terminal, as per a Hindustan Times report.

Many videos on social media showed thick smoke billowing inside Terminal 1 of the airport.

Previous fire accidents in Mumbai

A fire erupted on 22 March at a 24-storey residential building in Goregaon East. It was reported at Lakshya Chandi Building on Krishna Vatika Marg, near the district court, around 7:20 PM, according to civic officials.

Authorities said the fire was confined to the sixth floor of the tower. At least eight fire engines from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, along with other support vehicles, were deployed to contain the blaze.

Firefighters managed to rescue a woman, who was treated for trauma, the officials added.

Police, electricity department personnel, 108 ambulance services, and local staff from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation were also rushed to the scene to assist in firefighting and rescue efforts.

Another fire incident happened at a shop in Turbhe Sector 21 earlier that evening in the city. Footage from the site showed large flames and thick smoke emanating from the building’s windows. Firefighting teams managed to bring the blaze under control.

On 13 February, a fire broke out on the ninth floor of a 45-storey residential building in Gokuldham. Fire brigade teams rushed to the scene and quickly brought the blaze under control.

Earlier that day, another fire erupted at a waste stockyard inside the Naval Dockyard. Authorities confirmed that the fire was brought under control and no casualties were reported.

The causes of both incidents were under investigation.

Separately, a 63-year-old woman died and her 34-year-old niece was injured in a fire at their flat in a 13-storey building in Vile Parle on 9 February, just before a family wedding, officials said.

The fire broke out in the Satra family’s flat at Suvidha Pearl Building at 9:51 AM. At least five fire engines and Mumbai Fire Brigade vehicles took around three hours to extinguish the flames. The flat belongs to the family of the building’s developer.

"Bhavna Satra, a sister-in-law of the builder, and her niece Aneree rushed to the flat. Satra was trapped inside while Aneree escaped with minor injuries. Since she was an asthma patient, the 63-year-old woman died of suffocation," PTI quoted an official as saying.

The incident occurred while the Satra family members were attending rituals elsewhere in the building and noticed smoke coming from the flat. Police have filed a report of accidental death, and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
