Mumbai police have told a court that the allegations made by influencer Sapna Gill against cricketer Prithvi Shaw are 'false and unfounded'. The police also told the magistrate presiding over the case that CCTV footage from the pub showed Gill and her friend Shobhit Thakur drunk and dancing. The police argued that Thakur tried to record the cricketer on his mobile phone, but Shaw stopped him.
Sapna Gill was arrested in February in connection with an alleged attack on Shaw in a pub in suburban Andheri over an argument about taking selfies. After being released on bail, Gill tried to lodge an FIR against Shaw and his friend Ashish Yadav for molestation and outraging modesty.
However, after the police did not register a case against Shaw, the social media influencer approached a magistrate's court in Andheri and sought to register an FIR under IPC sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult modesty of woman) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means).
The investigating officer in the case appeared before the magistrate on Monday and submitted a report on the matter. Police told the court that after reviewing the CCTV footage, it didn't appear that Shaw and others had in any way molested Gill. Police also informed the magistrate that they had recorded statements from witnesses in the pub, who stated that no one had touched Gill inappropriately.
The police also argued that they had examined CCTV footage from the Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower which showed Gill following the cricketer's car with a baseball bat in her hand. Police say the CCTV footage shows the social media influencer smashing the windshield of Shaw's car.
The police have recorded statements from CISF officials who have also said in the report that no such incident took place. CISF officials said that when they reached the spot, they saw the windshield of the car smashed and a woman holding a baseball bat, which she threw to the side after seeing the police approaching.
Meanwhile, Sapna Gill's lawyer asked the judge to allow him to show the video footage of the incident that went viral on social media along with CCTV footage from outside the pub. The court asked the Mumbai police to produce the CCTV footage of the entire incident and adjourned the matter till June 28.
