To ease the traffic woes, in India's financial capital, construction work of the 16.5-kilometer-long deck of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Sea Link (MTHL) is going on in full swing. Construction of MTHL's deck will be reportedly completed by Wednesday.

The brand new section of the MTHL will reduce the traveling time between Mumbai and Pune to 90 minutes. However, people need to wait for a little more for a hassle-free transit on the road, as the link will be open for vehicles only after the completion of the entire deck of the sea link.

The Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, after its inauguration, will become India's longest sea bridge and will cater to almost 70,000 vehicles. MTHL will connect Mumbai with the Mumbai-Pue Expressway via an elevated corridor, according to MMDA. The trans-harbour link will significantly reduce the travelling between Mumbai, Pune, Navi Mumbai, Lonavla, etc.

After the completion of MTHL, MMRDA will start the waterproofing, asphalting, and construction of crash barriers at the sea link. The authority will also start working on installing CCTV cameras, lampposts, and toll infrastructure.

It is worth noting, that MTHL will be the first sea bridge in India with an Open Road Tolling (ORT) system. The new system would enable commuters to drive past the toll booth at a speed of up to 100 kmph without slowing down to pay the toll.

The project is being carried out by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), which is a Maharashtra government agency, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency

Other than this, there are also plans to install artificial intelligence-based cameras, that will help in reducing congestion on the road, reported TOI. With the help of these AI cameras, traffic authorities would be able to track vehicle breakdowns and act swiftly to avoid traffic congestion.

The MTHL project will cost the government around 18,000 core. The harbour link will reduce the travel time between Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, etc. After the project, it would be possible to commute from Sewri in central Mumbai to Chirle in Navi Mumbai in 15-20 minutes. The 22 km long bridge will bring places like Goa, Pune, and Nagpur closer to Mumbai.
