Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Sunday that the ambitious Coastal Road project being constructed in Mumbai city will be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The state government will also erect the statue of Sambhaji Maharaj on the road.
The name was finalized after multiple considerations. The family of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar also requested the Maharashtra government to name the Coastal Road after her.
1. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) started working on the Coastal Road project in October 2018. The ₹12,700 crore project connects Marine Drive to Worli and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
2. The project comprises twin tunnels dug 10 meters and 70 meters below Girgaum Chowpatty and Priyadarshini Park with the help of India’s largest TBM (tunnel boring machine) ‘Mawla’.
3. The coastal road project from Marine Drive to Worli will be 26 km long in length and will include 16 km of interchangers at three locations.
4. The coastal road will result in a reduction of travel time between Marine Lines located in the southern part of Mumbai and Kandivali situated in the northern part of Mumbai by 70%. In addition, it is expected to reduce fuel consumption by 34%, as well as lower noise and air pollution levels.
5. The project will be a part of deliberations in the upcoming G-20 2nd Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group (DRRWG) Meet in Mumbai from 23 to 25 May where the BMC will highlight the disaster management measures taken for the coastal road project.
