Maharashtra: As violence erupted in the Mahal area of Maharashtra's Nagpur on Monday, videos of clashes went viral on social media platforms amid Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari's appeal to maintain peace.

Violence gripped several areas in central Nagpur reportedly after rumours that the holy book of the Muslim community was burnt during an agitation by a right-wing body for the removal of Aurangzeb's tomb.

At least four people were injured in the incident after protesters clashed with the police.

"Stones were pelted, and the police were attacked. This is very wrong, and I am monitoring the situation. I have directed the Police Commissioner to take strict action to maintain law and order and restore peace," said CM Devendra Fadnavis, issuing a video statement.

Meanwhile, Nagpur Police have issued prohibitory orders in the city and detained over 20 people.

“Police are looking into the CCTV footage and other video clips available with them to identify the culprits, an FIR in the matter is under process. Police have also appealed to maintain peace in the city and cooperate maintaining the law and order in Nagpur,” reported ANI quoting police.

Congress slams BJP

Congress leader Pawan Khera described reports of clashes as "deeply disturbing.

"Mahal is the Chief Minister’s own area. In its 300 years of dynamic existence, Nagpur has never experienced riots. Over the last several days, attempts have been made to weaponise 300-year-old history and use it to create divisions, distractions and unrest, Khera said.

"These clashes expose the real face of the ideology of the ruling regime -- both at the Centre and in the state," Khera added.

Nitin Gadkari appeals for peace

Union minister Nitin Gadkari appealed for peace and harmony amid violence in parts of Nagpur city.

"Nagpur always has a history of peace. I appeal to all my brothers to maintain peace. Do not believe rumours and do not come on roads," the Union minister said in a video message.

Gadkari appealed to people to cooperate with the administration in maintaining the law and order and the tradition of harmony.
