New traffic rules: How to avoid paying fine if you forget driving licence
- If you are caught driving without a licence you will be fined ₹5,000 under the new traffic rules
- The government has allowed motorists to store e-copies of all their transport related documents
Ever since the new Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019, came into force from 1 September, there have been several reports of motorists paying hefty penalties for forgetting to carry documents like driving license and vehicle related papers. If all your papers are in order, then one easy way to escape the fine under the new traffic rules is to save e-copies of all important documents in DigiLocker or mParivahan app.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways had last year amended the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, removing the provision that people need to carry hard copies of transport related documents like driving licence, vehicle registration certificate, insurance, permit, etc. Under the revised rules, motorists can carry all such documents even in the electronic form when demanded by police or any other official.
The government has also come out with two apps, DigiLocker and mParivahan, where you can save all your documents in e-form and show them to the traffic police if they want to see any papers.
"Motorists can produce digital documents. Digital documents do not mean scanned copy or a photo of driving license, RC (registration certificate) or insurance. They have to be stored on DigiLocker or mParivahan app," a transport department official was quoted as saying by IANS.
Linked to both Aadhaar card and cellphone numbers, DigiLocker eliminates the use of physical documents as part of the government’s Digital India drive, since all data is stored in the cloud.
Under the new traffic rules, driving without licence can lead to a fine of ₹5,000, if the vehicle permit is missing you can be charged upto ₹10,000 and driving without insurance is fined at ₹2,000.
