Green house gas emissions decline significantly in India’s infra sector

The decline in GHG emissions underscores the efforts made by the NHAI to address environmental concerns and promote sustainability in the country’s infrastructure development

New Delhi: Green house gas (GHG) emissions from energy consumption, operations, transport, and travel have shown a substantial decline, according to the latest data released by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

According to the NHAI’s first ‘sustainability report, “The decline in GHG emissions underscores the efforts made by the NHAI to address environmental concerns and promote sustainability in the country’s infrastructure development. The data reveals a positive trend in reducing the carbon footprint associated with various aspects of infrastructure activities."

GHG emissions, measured in metric tonne of CO2 equivalent per kilometer constructed, saw a reduction of 9.7% in financial year 2020-21 and an additional 2% decline in FY2021-22, NHAI said.

Similarly in operations, energy intensity in giga joules/km reduced by 37% in FY 2020-21 and 27% in FY 2021-22, while the kilometers constructed through the reporting period has risen steadily. With over 97% penetration, electronic toll collection through FASTag has contributed to reduce the carbon footprint.

NHAI has been working to enhance energy efficiency and reduce the reliance on conventional energy sources. The organization has been actively transitioning towards cleaner and greener energy alternatives, leading to a decrease in indirect emissions.

The agency has been employing recycled materials for national highway construction, including the use of fly-ash and plastic waste. Over the past three years, NHAI has increased the utilization of Recycled Asphalt (RAP) and Recycled Aggregates (RA), contributing to the reduction of environmental impact.

In addition to these initiatives, NHAI has taken significant steps to address wildlife protection and conservation. The construction of over 100 wildlife crossings across 20 states within a span of three years aims to mitigate conflicts between humans and animals and promote biodiversity.
