Supertech says twin towers constructed as per building plan approved by Noida Authority

Realty firm Supertech on Sunday said the twin towers set to be demolished were constructed as per the building plan approved by Noida development authorities and no deviations were made. Supertech added that the demolition of these two towers will not impact its other real estate projects, which will be delivered to homebuyers.

"The Twin Towers Apex and Ceyane in Noida are a part of the Emerald Court project at Sector 93A constructed on land allotted by Noida authority. The building plans of the Project including the two towers were approved by the Noida Authority in 2009 which was strictly in accordance with the then prevailing Building Bye laws announced by the State Government," Supertech Ltd said in a statement.

No deviation from the building plan was made and it was constructed after making full payment to the authority, it added.

"However, the Hon’ble Supreme Court has not found the construction satisfactory on technical grounds and accordingly issued orders to demolish the two towers. We respect the orders of the Apex Court and are committed to implement the same," Supertech said.

The company has awarded the work of demolition to a world renowned agency Edifice Engineering which has expertise in carrying out safe demolitions of high-rise buildings, the statement said.

"We have completed and given delivery of more than 70,000 units to homebuyers and are committed to give delivery to remaining homebuyers as per schedule time frame. We assure all our home buyers that the order of Supreme Court will not affect any other ongoing project and all other projects will continue."

Men who will execute the demolition

Chetan Dutta the Indian blaster: Chetan Dutta will press the button that will demolish Supertech Twin Towers in Sector 93A, Noida. He has said that the mega implosion is going to be a "simple process". Explaining the details of the process that will raze the twin towers, he said, "It's a simple process; we generate current from the dynamo and then press the button which will ignite the detonators in all shock tubes within 9 seconds." "We'll be almost 50-70m away from the building, there will be no danger and we are very much sure that the building will collapse in a proper way... blasting area is covered with four layers of iron mesh and two layers of blanket, so no rubble will fly past but dust may," he added.

Debi Prasanna Kanungo senior principal scientist, CBRI: Debi Prasanna Kanungo is the leading the expert monitoring team as appointed by the Supreme Court. As quoted by HT, he said, “We have planned this implosion as a sequential blast with a time gap of 17 milliseconds between every blast. It ensures that the entire debris of the building does not hit the ground at once."

28 Aug 2022, 09:37:12 AM IST

Who are the men who will execute the demolition

Joe Brinkmann, managing director of Jet Demolition (Pty) Ltd: According to Brinkmann as quoted by The Wall Street Journal, both the towers will collapse within 12½ seconds from the moment he presses the button for the first explosion. If all the explosives were to be ignited simultaneously, Brinkmann said, the towers would fall straight down, which would pose greater risks for adjacent buildings, as well as a nearby gas pipeline. “We want these buildings to twist and to turn and to fall the way we want to," he said.

Mayur Mehta and Utkarsh Mehta: Edifice Engineering's project manager Mayur Mehta said only six people, including three foreign experts, Indian blaster Chetan Dutta, a police officer and himself, will remain within the exclusion zone to push the button for the blast. When asked about how confident he was regarding safe demolition, Mehta told news agency PTI: "100 per cent. I don't have any other word. We are 100 per cent confident."

His brother and Edifice Partner Utkarsh Mehta has assured residents of adjoining societies that there will be no damage to their homes except for chances of "cosmetic cracks" on outer paint and plasters of some structures. "The buildings are planned to come down in the south-west direction, away from the nearby buildings and towards the open area," he said.

Noida twin tower demolition: One nautical mile of air space briefly unavailable for flights

The Noida Authority has said that one nautical mile of air space around the twin tower demolition site will remain briefly unavailable for flights on 28 August. A nautical mile is equal to approximately 1.8 kilometres.

Experts say other methods to demolish would have taken longer

It could either be a matter of a few seconds or a tedious process of one-and-a-half to two years to safely demolish Supertech's illegal twin towers in Noida. The nearly 100-metre-tall structure, taller than the Qutub Minar, will be safely pulled down. Edifice partner Utkarsh Mehta told PTI that they are "150 per cent" confident that the towers will come down safely and in the direction as envisaged by them, assuring residents of no damage to their homes except for chances of "cosmetic cracks" on outer paint and plasters of some structures. On how many options they had for demolition of the twin towers, Mehta said there are basically three techniques to safely raze down any structure of such a scale - diamond cutter, use of robots and implosion. "The technique is chosen on the basis of three parameters - cost, time and safety," he said. He said the 'diamond cutter' would have taken over two years of time to completely demolish the twin towers safely, and its cost would have been five times of the implosion method. "There we would have to slowly cut down every column, wall and beam from top to bottom using cranes," Mehta said. Read more here

Noida Authority issues advisory

The Noida Authority has asked people, especially children, elderly and patients, living in nearby areas to wear face masks in the aftermath of the demolition as a precautionary measure.

The authority especially asked residents of nearby Parsvnath Prestige, Parsvnath Srishti societies, village Gejha and others in Sectors 93, 93A, 93B, 92 to wear face masks after 2.30 pm.

Diversions would be placed on roads leading to the twin towers in Noida Sector 93A from Sunday morning while the Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, barely 200 metres from the demolition site, would be closed for vehicular movement from 2 pm to 3 pm, DCP (Traffic) Ganesh Saha said.

Google maps will have updated feeds for diversions and real-time traffic situations on Sunday, Saha said, adding that arrangements have been made for movement of emergency vehicles.

DCP (Central Noida) Rajesh S said around 400 police personnel would be deployed for law and order duty, while PAC and NDRF personnel would also be on the ground for any contingencies.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Sunil Sharma said the health department would station six ambulances at the site equipped with officials and medicines. Beds have been reserved at the district hospital and private medical facilities Yatharth, Felix and Jaypee too.

The demolition of the twin towers will be carried out through the waterfall implosion technique which would bring them down within a few seconds literally like a house of cards. The eye-popping event would leave behind a whopping 55,000 tonnes of debris, even as some estimates put the figure at 80,000 tonnes. The debris would take an estimated three months to be cleared and disposed of. Noida Authority CEO Ritu Maheshwari said all arrangements are being made to clear the dust from the area in the aftermath of the demolition. Besides sanitation workers, mechanical sweeping machines, anti-smog guns, water sprinklers would be placed at the site, she said.

The court hearing

In 2014, the Allahabad HC directed the authority to demolish the twin towers within four months (at its own expense) from the date the order was filed. It had also directed the builder to refund flat buyers’ payments with an interest rate of 14%. In August 2021, Supreme Court upheld the Allahabad HC order, and ordered the demolition, noting that the structures had come up violating construction norms. The Supreme Court's decision was the result of a number of petitions submitted by homebuyers in support of and opposition to the Allahabad High Court's ruling. According to the Supreme Court, August 28 may be affirmed as the date of destruction, with a "bandwidth of seven days" between August 29 and September 4 to account for any little delays brought on by technical issues or weather circumstances.

When was the Supertech housing society proposed to be built and what went wrong?

The ‘Supertech Emerald Court’ housing society was proposed to be built in Noida's Sector 93A in 2004. The next year, the Noida authority sanctioned the building plan that showed 14 towers and nine floors. But this plan was later revised. And in 2012, the Noida authority reviewed the new plan, in which the height of the twin towers was fixed at 40 floors. Following this, Residents’ Welfare Association (RWA) of the society moved to Allahabad High Court stating that the construction was illegal.
