A non-bailable arrest warrant has been issued against former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in connection with a POCSO case.

The veteran BJP leader has also been summoned by the CID for questioning after a complaint was filed by the mother of a 17-year-old girl, resulting in his booking under the Act.

Yediyurappa, however, has vehemently denied the allegations and expressed his determination to address the case legally. A statement from his office indicated that the politician has applied for anticipatory bail at a special court seeking prevention from arrest.

The development came hours after Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara told reporters that the senior BJP leader could be arrested “if necessary”. He indicated that the CID must file a chargesheet before June 15.

The BJP leader—presently in Delhi—has sought a few days to appear before the CID. Reports quoting sources close to the politician indicate that he will likely join the probe after he returns. Yediyurappa had earlier moved the court seeking to quash the FIR.

The complaint against Yediyurappa was registered mid-March and transferred hours later to the CID for further investigation. He has been accused of sexually assaulting the minor during a meeting at his Dollars Colony residence in early February. The 54-year-old woman who levelled the charges had incidentally passed away from lung cancer at a private hospital in the state last month.

The CID collected Yediyurappa's voice sample in April after summoning him to the office. The probe agency has already recorded the victim's and her mother's statements under Section 164 of the CrPC.

Meanwhile, the Congress-led Karnataka government has appointed Special Public Prosecutor Ashok H Nayak to represent the CID in the case.
