Northwest, central India including Delhi to get respite from extreme heat today

Following scorching temperatures reaching 45°C on Monday, Delhi and other northwest Indian states can expect some respite starting Tuesday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday and Punjab on Wednesday, owing to the formation of a fresh western disturbance that is set to move over northwest India from Tuesday to Friday.
As per the weather system, gusty winds of 50-60 kmph are anticipated in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Wednesday, while Uttarakhand will experience them on Wednesday and Thursday. Hailstorms are predicted in Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, Haryana on Wednesday, and northern parts of Rajasthan between Wednesday and Thursday.
This forecast follows scorching temperatures recorded in various parts of Delhi, ranging from 43.4°C to 44.9°C. Jhansi registered the highest maximum temperature at 46.5°C, closely followed by Churu in Rajasthan at 45.7°C and Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh at 45.4°C.
West Bengal and Sikkim are bracing for heavy rainfall from Tuesday to Thursday, while hailstorms are predicted in these regions along with Bihar until Wednesday. In contrast, Assam and Meghalaya are expected to experience light to moderate precipitation accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds over the next two days.
In light of these forecasts, Agromet, the agriculture division of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has issued advice to farmers in these areas. They are advised to store harvested produce in safer locations and provide mechanical support to young fruit plants and vegetables to safeguard crops against strong winds. Additionally, farmers are urged to postpone irrigation and fertilizer application during gusty conditions.
For Madhya Pradesh farmers, Agromet recommends the application of irrigation to groundnut, green gram, black gram, summer maize, millet, jowar, watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber and summer vegetable crops. Application of light and frequent irrigation in sugarcane, fruit orchards, black gram, green gram and vegetables is advised in Uttar Pradesh, and in summer rice, green gram and vegetables in Jharkhand.
The weather bureau predicts Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh to get similar weather conditions as northeast India over the next two days. Western regions of Madhya Pradesh are likely to witness hailstorms on Wednesday and Thursday.
Light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over many parts of southern India over the next five days.
Heatwave conditions are likely in Jharkhand on Tuesday, while no significant change in maximum temperature is expected over the rest of the country during the next five days, except in northwest and central India.
