IT firm Wipro is working to make the National Register of Citizens (NRC) data for Assam live soon, NRC coordinator Hitesh Dev Sarma said on Wednesday, as the disappearance of the data from the official website sparked panic.
“Once Wipro makes the data live, it will be available for public. We hope people will be able to access it in the next 2-3 days,” Sarma told news agency PTI. He said there was no mala fide intent behind the data being taken offline.
The cloud service for the data was provided by Wipro under a contract that was valid till 19 October last year. However, the contract was not renewed.
The Union home ministry on Wednesday also clarified that the matter was purely a technical glitch. “The NRC data is safe. Some technical issues are there in the visibility on cloud. These are being resolved,” a ministry spokesperson said.
The absence of the data had sparked panic among the 1.9 million people who had been excluded, as their rejection certificates were yet to be issued. These certificates would help these cases to be taken to the foreigners tribunal for appeal.
