Odisha train accident is considered the worst train mishap in two decades and the death toll in the tragedy has touched 288. The rescue workers helped the injured and rushed them to hospital, while the dead bodies were kept in a separate area from where the families can claim them. But, one rescuer was shocked when one of the presumed dead person woke up and clutched his leg, a report by India Today said on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old Robin Naiya was presumed dead and spent some time among hundreds of dead bodies in the school room in Odisha's Balasore. "I am alive, not dead, please give me water,” he told the rescuer.
When the rescuers found him alive, he was rushed to the hospital and is currently admitted to the orthopedic ward of Medinipur Medical College Hospital. The reports have claimed that Robin has lost his legs and is undergoing treatment in critical condition.
“Robin, my nephew, was traveling to Andhra to work as a migrant laborer. As the train met with an accident, he lost consciousness. He found himself amid a pile of bodies. He held one of the rescuer’s legs asking for water, then he was discovered,” Robin's uncle told India Today.
Robin Naiya was traveling with six more people from his village, all of them are missing as of now.
Interestingly, Robin Naiya's relative was also similarly presumed dead in 2010 when the Jnaneshwari Express derailed in West Midnapore. The horrific train tragedy killed around 148 people and initially, Robin's uncle was also counted among the dead.
“My brother was dragged after rescuers assumed he was dead. He somehow managed to run away from the spot and called me from someone else’s phone," Manabendra Sardar, uncle of Robin Naiya told India Today.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took over the investigation of the Odisha train accident on Tuesday. “[The] Central Bureau of Investigation has registered a case on [the] request of Ministry of Railways, consent of Odisha Government & further orders from DoPT(Govt. of India) relating to a train accident involving Coromandel Express, Yashwantpur-Howrah Express, and a Goods train at Bahanaga Bazar in Odisha on June 2," the central agency said.
