After a deadly train accident in Odisha left a devastating impact on people, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance announced a relaxation in the insurance claim settlement process for the families affected by the Odisha train accident. The tragic accident killed at least 275 people and injured over 1,100 persons.

The insurance company said it will “expedite the claim settlement to provide financial relief to those affected by the tragedy". The insurer further added that the persons claiming the insurance settlement, including those covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY), will need only three documents:

- Bank account details

- Death certificate from municipal authorities. If death certificate is not available, list of deceased passengers issued by hospitals, government authorities or the police

- Copy of valid address proof of the nominee

The insurer has also set up a dedicated 24X7 helpline (1-860-266-7766) to assist insurance customers.

"We express our condolences at the loss of lives in the horrific train crash in Odisha. In this hour of grief, our customers can count on us to be supportive and sensitive to their needs. We have therefore relaxed the claims settlement process as per which the nominee needs to submit only three basic documents. Our dedicated 24X7 helpline is equipped to handle all queries pertaining to claims. Nominees can also call our helpline to get all their queries clarified," said Amish Banker, Senior Executive Vice President – Customer Service & Operations, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance.

In a recent development around the Odisha train accident, a senior Indian Railway official disagreed with the certain findings of the five-member inquiry committee which conducted the preliminary probe of the factors that led to the Odisha train accident. The preliminary investigation concluded that a “signaling error" caused the Odisha train accident.

Senior Section Engineer A.K. Mahanta gave a dissenting note to the report and said that the ‘datalogger’ report concludes that the signal was green for the main line, not the loop line. “Based on observations from the data logger report the point was set for the normal side (main line). It may be reserved after derailment (sic)," he said.
