On Chidambaram's birthday, Congress drums up support in his favour

  • His son and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram put out a two-page letter, wishing his father
  • Several other senior leaders of the Congress including former union minister Jairam Ramesh tweeted in support of Chidambaram.

New Delhi: While wishing P Chidambaram on his 74th birthday on Monday, senior leaders of the Congress party also drummed up support for the former union minister currently lodged in Tihar jail.

Chidambaram in a post on Twitter said greetings from his well wishers made him feel “young" at heart.

"I have asked my family to tweet on my behalf the following: My family have brought me greetings from friends, party colleagues and well-wishers. I am reminded that I am 74 years old. Indeed I am but at heart I feel 74 years young. Thank you all, my spirits have been lifted higher," said Chidambaram’s post.

His son and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Karti Chidambaram put out a two-page letter, wishing his father while taking jibes at the union government. "You are 74 years old and no 56!!! can stop you," Karti wrote in the letter posted on Twitter. "Your birthday is not the same without you with us. We miss you, and your absence tugs at our hearts, and we wish you were back home to cut the cake with us. But of course, in today's day and age, turning 74 is nothing compared to turning 100 days old," Karti added in the letter.

On 6 September, the veteran Congress leader was sent to 14 days of judicial custody to Tihar jail, after the conclusion of his CBI custody in the INX Media case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered an FIR in May 2017 for alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of 305 crore in 2007, when Chidambaram was the finance minister in the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)-1 government.

Several other senior leaders of the Congress including former union minister Jairam Ramesh tweeted in support of Chidambaram. "Today PC (Chidambaram) turns 74. It is an agnipariksha (test) he is going through but he will come out of it vindicated. I have worked very closely with him since 1986 and it has been a great privilege and education doing so. My thoughts are with him," Jairam said in his Twitter post.

"Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional. I am sure that the vendetta politics can't defeat you. Happy Birthday to @PChidambaram_IN," tweeted K C Venugopal, senior Congress leader and general secretary in-charge of the party.
