New Delhi: Commerce and Industry minister Piyush Goyal on Monday highlighted the transformative role of the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) in democratizing the country’s existing e-commerce ecosystem.

Speaking virtually at the “ONDC Elevate" program in Bengaluru, Goyal emphasised that ONDC is an engine of growth with the potential to redefine the entire industry.

The minister noted that the significant number of sellers on the network serves as a testament to ONDC’s impact, as digital commerce undergoes a reimagination. Engaging with all network participants during the Open House session, Goyal took note of their feedback and urged them to redouble their efforts in democratizing digital commerce in India.

In response to queries from participants, he emphasized that any marketplace joining ONDC should do so with a serious commitment and not merely for namesake. He further highlighted the importance of a spirit of give and take, stressing that platforms joining ONDC should contribute to its progress and not solely benefit from the network.

“ONDC Elevate" commemorated ONDC’s one-year completion, fostering a collaborative environment by bringing together participants and ecosystem players of the network. It provided a platform for open discussions on accomplishments to date and facilitated brainstorming sessions to shape the future trajectory of ONDC.

The event was attended by members of the ONDC Advisory Council, including Dilip Asbe, CEO of NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India), Adil Zainulbhai, Chairman of the Capacity Building Commission, and Jaxay Shah, Chairman of QCI (Quality Council of India). The interactive session allowed participants to share their suggestions and benefit from the guidance of the minister and the advisory council members.

Reflecting on ONDC’s one-year journey, T. Koshy, Managing Director and CEO of ONDC, emphasized the need to assess achievements while preparing for the future. He highlighted the network’s growth from five cities to 236 cities and its continuous evolution with diverse participation from merchants.

From the launch of beta testing on September 29, 2022, ONDC has scaled to 36,000 sellers, 45+ Network participants and 8+ categories, with a weekly average of 13,000+ retail orders and 36,000+ mobility rides per day with peak transactions reaching 25,000 retail orders on a day.
