One Nation One Election Highlights: The first official meeting of the 'One Nation One Election' committee that was formed to examine the policy, is set to be held today. On 16 September, former President Ram Nath Kovind had said that “The first meeting (of 'One Nation, One Election' committee) will take place on September 23."

The Union Law Ministry had named eight members to the committee, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, that will examine the issue of simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, Assemblies, municipalities and panchayats. It will also examine and recommend whether the amendments to the Constitution would require ratification by the states.

The committee will also analyse and recommend possible solutions to scenarios such as a hung House, the adoption of a no-confidence motion or defection or any other event in case of simultaneous polls. Check all the latest updates here.

Introductory meet of panel on simultaneous polls on Saturday

The introductory meeting of the high-level committee under former president Ram Nath Kovind for simultaneous elections will be held here on Saturday to discuss the roadmap and how to go about holding consultation with stakeholders.

Kovind had recently told reporters in Odisha that the meeting will be held on September 23.

The government had on September 2 notified the eight-member "high-level" panel to examine and make recommendations at the earliest on the issue of holding simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities and panchayats. (PTI)

'One nation, one election is possible but…' ex-chief election commissioner explains roadmap to implement it

As Centre announced on Friday that it will explore the options around ‘one nation, one election’, former Chief Election Commissioner of India OP Rawat cited that it is possible to implement the proposal but some conditions needs to bee met.

He said, in case Centre wants to implement it, “Some amendments will have to be made in the Constitution and Representation of People Act, 1951. Aam Aadmi Party convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Monday opposed the concept of 'one nation, one election' and said instead the country needs ‘one nation, one education and one treatment’ as he once again pledged a slew of guarantees for the people of Madhya Pradesh if the AAP was voted to power in the year-end polls.

The Delhi Chief Minister said the country needs frequent elections, even every month, as this allows political parties to go before electors regularly with promises which will not be the case if all voting takes places just once in five years.
