Pahlaj Nihalani, former Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), passed away on Thursday, June 4, according to a report in Hindustan Times. He was 76 years old and died at a Mumbai hospital at around 9:30 am.

According to the report, the Shola Aur Shabnam producer had been unwell for some time now. An India Today report mentioned that Pahlaj Nihalani was suffering from liver-related health issues.

His funeral will be held today in Mumbai. Nihalani is survived by his wife, Nita Nihalani, and his three sons.

Current CBFC Chairman Shashi Shekhar Vempati confirmed Pahlaj Nihalani's death in a condolence message on X. He said, “Heartfelt condolences from the entire CBFC family on the demise of former CBFC Chairperson Shri Pahlaj Nihalani 🙏.”

Actor and MP Kangana Ranaut also condoled the passing of Pahlaj Nihalani. She said, “Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Pahlaj Nihalani ji.”

“A producer who backed numerous films, launched and supported many artists, and remained passionately committed to Indian cinema for decades, his contribution to the film industry will always be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” she said.

Producers Guild of India said, “Deeply saddened by the passing of Pahlaj Nihalani ji. We pay tribute to his body of work and contribution to the industry, and extend our condolences to his family and well wishers🙏🏻”

KRK said, “RIP Pahlaj Nihalani Sahab! You did a very good job as a film maker. We all have to follow you sir. This is the real truth of the life.”

Pahlaj Nihalani was a well-known name in the Hindi film industry and was associated with several successful commercial films over the years. Born on January 10, 1950, Nihalani started his career as a producer with the 1982 movie “Haathkadi”.

He was known for producing movies such as 'Ilzaam', 'Shola Aur Shabnam', 'Aankhen', and 'Andaz'. He also shared a long working relationship with filmmaker David Dhawan and actor Govinda and was credited with giving Govinda his first big break. He also introduced actor Chunky Panday with “Aag Hi Aag” in 1987.

Before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Nihalani made a YouTube video called “Har Har Modi, Ghar Ghar Modi”.

His tenure as CBFC chairman

Pahlaj Nihalani was appointed the CBFC chairman in January 2015. His tenure lasted until August 2017 and was riddled with controversies with frequent clashes with filmmakers over cuts and disclaimers.

During his stint, he introduced strict new guidelines barring certain expletives even in 'A'-rated films and sought to restrict content that could be seen as hurting religious sentiments or depicting violence.
