Parliament approves bill for bifurcation of J&K into two Union Territories
Parliament approves abrogation of special status given to J&K under Article 370370 votes were in favour of the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019 and 70 against it

Home Minister Amit Shah today moved the resolution to revoke Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, in Lok Sabha. He also introduced Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019 in the Lower House of Parliament. A resolution removing the special status of the state under Article 370 was approved by the Rajya Sabha on Monday.

7.45 pm: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019 with 370 votes in favour and 70 against it.
Having already been passed in the Upper House, the bill now awaits Presidential assent before becoming an Act.
The Jammu and Kashmir (Reorganisation) Bill, 2019 strips Jammu and Kashmir's status of a state and converts it into two Union Territories - Jammu and Kashmir with a legislature and Ladakh without legislature.
7.10 pm: Parliament approved abrogation of special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370. The resolution was passed in Lok Sabha by division of votes with 351 members in support and 72 against it while one member abstained.
6.40 pm: "Over 41,500 people lost their lives in J&K due to militancy since 1989," said Shah in Lok Sabha.
He further said that scrapping of Article 370 is not a historical blunder but in fact the Modi government is "rectifying the historical blunder".
"Law and order situation in J&K has not deteriorated; all actions taken were precautionary," clarified Shah.
6.10 pm: In his reply to the debate on abrogation of Article 370 in Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah said "Article 370 is creating doubts over J&K's relations with India" and that
"India will continue to claim Pakistan-occupied Kashmir".
"When normalcy returns to J&K, govt will have no hesitation in restoring its full statehood," says Shah in LS.
"Modi govt has no intention to remove Article 371 which gives certain special rights to some Northeast states," Shah clarified in Lok Sabha.

It was an embarrassing moment for the Congress when Home Minister Amit Shah pulled up its leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for questioning the government how Jammu and Kashmir issue can be an "internal issue" if it is under United Nations' monitoring since 1948.
5.50 pm: Ladakh MP gets PM's praise for LS speech

BJP member from Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namagyan earned the praise of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his speech in Lok Sabha on Tuesday on a motion to abrogate special status given to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370, PTI reported. Participating in the debate on a motion to abrogate special status to J-K and split the state into two Union Territories, Namgyan said the people of Ladakh had been fighting for UT status for the last seven decades. "If Ladakh is today under-developed, then Article 370 and Congress party are responsible for it," the MP said.
In a tweet later, the prime minister said the Ladakh BJP MP coherently presented aspirations of people of the region in his speech. "My young friend, Jamyang Tseing Namgyal who is @MPLadakh delivered an outstdanding speech in the Lok Sabha while discussing key bills on J&K. He coherently presents the aspirations of our sisters and brothers from Ladakh. It is a must hear," Modi said in the tweet.
4.45 pm: A PIL was been filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday challenging the process of making Article 370 redundant in its application to the the erstwhile Jammu and Kashmir state.

Rajasthan's youth affairs and sports minister Ashok Chandna on Tuesday said the implementation of Article 370 should be in an atmosphere of peace and trust rather than through dictatorship. Chandna in a tweet said he welcomes the Centre's decision of scrapping Article 370 of the Constitution. He, however, stressed that it should take place in a manner that no citizen face any problem in future.
