To commemorate the inauguration of the new parliament building, the Ministry of Finance announced the launch of a special ₹75 coin on May 28. A limited number of coins will be launched by the government to mark the occasion. However, this is not the first time when a special coin will be released to mark a special occasion.
Take a look at some other events when special coins were released by the central government to mark these occasions.
- ₹100 coin on the 100th edition of Man Ki Baat
The central government released a ₹100 coin to mark the 100th edition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's monthly radio program ‘Mann Ki Baat’ on April 30 this year. The coin released features a microphone and the year ‘2023’ minted on it. Notably, only one ₹100 coin was minted.
- ₹100 silver coin
Other than the ₹75 coin marking parliament inauguration, a ₹100 silver coin will be released on the same day with the image of the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and TDP founder Nadnamuri Taraka Rama Rao (NTR).
- ₹175 coin on the establishment of IIT Roorkee
In 2022, PM Modi launched a special ₹175 coin to mark 175 years of the foundation of IIT-Roorkee in July last year.
- ₹100 coins at 90th Interpol General Assembly
To mark the 90th Interpol General Assembly's session in New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released a ₹100 coin and a postal stamp on the occasion.
- ₹100 coin in honour of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee
As a tribute to India's former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Indian government launched a commemorative coin worth ₹100 in December 2018. The coin was launched a day before the birth anniversary of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died in August in 2018. The coin was released to mark his 94th birth anniversary.
Other than these coins, the government has released commemorative coins on other special occasions including ₹100 coin to honour the birth anniversary of Rajmata Vijayraje Scindia, and another ₹100 coin on the 476th birth anniversary of Maharana Pratap. Moreover, a series of special coins were released to mark the 75 years of India's independence, ie, Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav.
