New Delhi: Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying Parshottam Rupala launched the Sagar Parikrama Yatra Phase-V in Karanja in the Raigad district of Maharashtra on Wednesday.
The expedition will cover various coastal regions, including the Gateway of India, Karanja (Raigad District), Mirkarwada (Ratnagiri District), Devgad (Sindhudurg District), Malvan, Vasco, Mormugaon, and Canacona (South Goa).
In his address, Rupala emphasized the significance of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojna (PMMSY) scheme and highlighted the multidimensional activities of the blue revolution. He stressed the need to increase fisheries production and productivity, both in inland and marine sectors. This includes focusing on infrastructure development, marketing, exports, and institutional arrangements.
The minister also called for volunteers to actively create awareness about the schemes, enabling beneficiaries to take full advantage of the initiatives.
Approximately 6,000 fishermen, fish farmers, and distinguished guests participated in the program held in Karanja (Raigad District).
Rupala also took the opportunity to interact with beneficiaries, including fish farmers and fishermen, listening to their experiences and addressing their issues. Many beneficiaries commended the tremendous impact of the PMMSY scheme on their lives and the fishing community.
Furthermore, the minister discussed the promotion of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and shared that camps had been conducted in coastal districts of Maharashtra to raise awareness about KCC registration and its benefits. As a gesture of support, he felicitated beneficiaries, including fishermen, fish farmers, and other stakeholders, with Kisan Credit Cards and QR Code Aadhar Card/E-Shram Cards.
Rupala enlightened the audience by sharing the concept of Sagar Parikrama and highlighted several key points. He emphasized the people-centric governance model and the significant investments made in the fisheries sector since 2014. The introduction of schemes like PMMSY with a budget of Rs. 20,500 crore, FIDF with a budget of approximately Rs. 8,000 crore, and the Blue Revolution with a budget of Rs. 3,000 crore, totaling an investment of around Rs. 32,000 crore, demonstrates the government’s commitment to the sector’s development.
He also highlighted India’s growing reputation as a source of solutions, attributing it to the government’s trust in the wisdom and active participation of the people, particularly in the fisheries sector. He discussed his interactions with stakeholders and the progress review of schemes like PMMSY in coastal areas. The minister emphasized the importance of creating awareness among fish farmers to promote the use of KCC and explored the vast potential of the ocean’s wealth to contribute to the economy in the fisheries sector.
The Sagar Parikrama journey symbolizes an evolutionary initiative by the Government of India, demonstrating solidarity with fisherfolk, fish farmers, and other concerned stakeholders along the coastal belt. It aims to resolve the challenges faced by the fishing community and facilitate their economic upliftment through various fisheries schemes and programs implemented by the government, such as the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) and the Kisan Credit Card (KCC).
