PM Narendra Modi holds telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin

In context of Ukraine conflict, PM Modi during talks with Putin reiterated his call for dialogue and diplomacy as only way forward

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation today with Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke by phone on Friday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Kremlin said, as reported by Reuters.

Following up on their meeting in Samarkand on the sidelines of the SCO Summit, the two leaders reviewed several aspects of the bilateral relationship, including energy cooperation, trade and investments, defence & security cooperation, and other key areas.

"PM Modi briefed President Putin on India’s ongoing Presidency of G-20, highlighting its key priorities. He also looked forward to both countries working together during India’s Chairship of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. They agreed to remain in regular touch with each other," according to a statement from PMO.

In the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated India's position in favour of dialogue and diplomacy as the only way forward, in his conversation with Russian President Putin.

PM Modi and President Putin reviewed bilateral ties in areas of energy, trade and investments, defence cooperation.

In a statement, the Kremlin said Putin had given Modi his assessment of the conflict at Modi's request.

It said the leaders expressed satisfaction with the high level of cooperation in their "privileged strategic partnership" and discussed prospects for the two countries to work together in areas such as investment, energy, agriculture, transport and logistics.

During their last meeting in Samarkand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin appreciated the sustained momentum in bilateral relations, including contacts at various levels. In his remarks, PM Modi said, "today's era is not of war."

"Today's era is not of war and I have spoken to you about it on the call. Today we will get the opportunity to talk about how we can progress on the path of peace. India, Russia have stayed together with each other for several decades," PM Modi said.

"We spoke several times on the phone about India-Russia bilateral relations and various issues. We should find ways to address the problems of food, fuel security and fertilizers. I want to thank Russia and Ukraine for helping us to evacuate our students from Ukraine," he added.Meanwhile, Vladimir Putin had said, "I know about your position on Ukraine conflict. I know about your concerns. We want all of this to end as soon as possible."
