About Bangladesh Independence Day, Maitri Diwas

Bangladesh celebrates its independence day, called Bangladesh National Day on March 26, to commemorate the country's cessation from Pakistan in 1971.

Further, India and Bangladesh observe ‘Maitri Diwas’ on December 6, as it is the date that the Indian government recognised Bangladesh as a country in 1971. Notably, India was the second country, after Bhutan, to recognize Bangladesh as a sovereign and independent state on December 6 in 1971.

In March 2021, PM Modi designated March 6 as Bangladesh-India Friendship Day (known as Moitree Dibosh in the local Bengali language).
