Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) Sunday night amid the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The meeting is believed to have been convened in the wake of the prevailing situation following the attack on Iran by the United States and Israel.

The prime minister heads the CCS while Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are its members.

US-Israeli strike kills Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

The CCS meeting follows the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East since Saturday, when the US and Israel launched an attack on Iran. On Sunday, Iran confirmed that Supreme Leader Khamenei was killed in the attack in Tehran.

Iran, which vowed to respond to the US-Israeli strikes, has unleashed a barrage of missile and drone attacks on neighbouring countries, hosting US military bases.

The Middle East is home to an estimated Indian population of 11.4 million, out of which, over 9.4 million are in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states.

The ongoing missile and drone attacks by Iran has forced the closure of airspaces across the Gulf region and cancellation of thousands of flights, including many to and from India.
