New Delhi: The US has supported India’s right to self defence against cross border terrorism, an Indian foreign ministry statement said Saturday, that gave details of a telephone conversation between US and Indian national security advisors overnight.

The call was placed by the US side to express condolences and outrage, the statement said, in the wake of the Pulwama attack on Thursday in which 42 paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force personnel were killed when a suicide bomber collided his bomb laden vehicle into a bus they were traveling in. Responsibility for the attack was claimed by the Pakistan based Jaish e Mohammed terrorist group.

According to the Indian statement,US National Security Advisor John Bolton offered all assistance to India to bring the perpetrators and backers of the attack promptly to justice.

    Doval appreciated the US support.

The two “vowed to work together to ensure that Pakistan cease to be a safe haven for JeM and terrorist groups that target India, the US and others in the region," the statement said.

“They resolved to hold Pakistan to account for its obligations under UN resolutions and to remove all obstacles to designating JeM leader Masood Azhar as a global terrorist under the UN Security Council Resolution 1267 Committee process," it added.

Later on Saturday Bolton in a Twitter post said: “I expressed condolences to NSA Doval yesterday for the reprehensible terrorist attack on India. Pakistan must crack down on JeM and all terrorists operating from its territory. Countries should uphold UNSC responsibilities to deny safe haven and support for terrorists @nsaajit."

Expressions of support have poured in from across the world in the aftermath of the Pulwama attack, seen as the worst in Kashmir in decades. All countries have condemned the attack as a terrorist incident with none calling for talks between India and Pakistan to resolve outstanding issues — seen as code words for the dispute over Jammu and Kashmir.

Particularly strong were the statements from the US and France that placed blame on Pakistan.

Meanwhile, Indian high commissioner to Pakistan, Ajay Bisaria who had been called in for consultations, arrived in New Delhi and met with senior officials in the ministry.

India had issued a demarche to Pakistan and called for “immediate" and “verifiable" action against the JeM. New Delhi also suspended special trade privileges to Pakistan following the attack.
