Telugu superstar Allu Arjun made a virtual court appearance on Friday in connection with the recent death of a fan. The Pushpa 2 star was arrested on December 13 after a film screening for his latest movie led to a stampede in Hyderabad. Arjun has also filed a regular bail petition in the court which will come up for hearing on December 30.
A 35-year-old woman died and her eight-year-old son was injured during a stampede-like situation on December 4. The incident took place at the Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad as a massive crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of the star. The situation had escalated as Allu Arjun waved to fans from the sunroof of his vehicle.
Police allege that this action contributed to the chaos — resulting in the death of a woman named Revathi while her son sustained serious injuries. Officials also claimed that his team failed to take necessary actions to defuse the situation — despite being informed about the large crowd and potential danger.
The Telangana Police had registered a case against the actor and his security team as well as the theatre management following a complaint by the family of the victim.
Arjun was arrested on December 13 and remanded to 14 days of judicial custody by the Nampally court. He received interim bail from the Telangana High Court on a bond of ₹50,000 hours after being shifted to jail. He was eventually released the next day follow a delay in processing his release.
“It was purely accidental and unintentional... I have been going to the same theatre for the last 20 years, and I have been to the same place more than 30 times. There has never been an accident like this before. I should reserve my comments because I don't want to say anything that will tamper with the case,” he had said after receiving bail.
