Rahul Gandhi faces massive criticism for ‘Muslim league is secular’ comment: ‘Poorly read and disingenuous….’
Rahul Gandhi has faced criticism for calling the Muslim League a completely secular party. The comments were made in response to a question about the Congress's alliance with the League in the state of Kerala.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday faced massive backlash for his claim that the 'Muslim League is a "completely secular party".
Gandhi, while responding to a question on the Congress's alliance with Muslim League in Kerala, on Thursday said, "Muslim League is a completely secular party, there is nothing non-secular about them. I think the person (reporter) hasn't studied the Muslim League."
He was fielding questions from journalists during a free-wheeling conversation at the National Press Club in Washington on Thursday.
The BJP has criticised Rahul Gandhi for his remark stating that the Congress leader's compulsion to remain acceptable in Wayanad that he called Muslim League a "secular party".
Following the comment, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju lashed out at Gandhi stating that it was "extremely unfortunate" that some people in the country "still consider the person who supports the Muslim League as Secular."
Rijiju also asked how Mohammad Ali Jinnah's Muslim League which was "responsible" for India's partition on religious lines be a secular party.
Taking to Twitter, the BJP leader said, "Jinnah's Muslim League is a secular party? The party responsible for India's partition on religious lines is a secular party? Extremely unfortunate that some people in India still consider the person who supports the Muslim League as Secular!"
BJP leader Amit Malviya said in a tweet, “Jinnah's Muslim League, the party responsible for India's partition, on religious lines, according to Rahul Gandhi is a 'secular' party. Rahul Gandhi, though poorly read, is simply being disingenuous and sinister here...It is also his compulsion to remain acceptable in Wayanad."
In a similar note, Union Minister Prahlad Singh Patel told news agency PTI, “They (Congress) perceive the Muslim League as secular but target BJP for being divisive. The country needs to understand that Congress is trying to sow seeds of partition."
Meanwhile, UP Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak told news agency ANI, “This (Rahul Gandhi's statement) is very saddening. People of India will never accept the insulting of nation on foreign soil."
Gandhi is currently on a visit to the US.
