Railways announces 25% discounted ticket scheme: 10 things to know

Railways new discounted ticket fare scheme will be offered in trains like Shatabdi Express, Tejas Express and many other premium trains

    New Delhi: Railways is set to roll out a 25% discount fare scheme in some trains which have low occupancy from next month. This discount will be offered in trains like Shatabdi Express, Tejas Express, Gatiman Express, Double Decker, Intercity trains among others from September, the railways said. Railways has come up with this discount offer in order to bump up ticket sales. Once the scheme is in place, no other discounts such as the flexi-fare scheme or the graded discount in Shatabdi trains will be applicable.

    Here are 10 things to know about railways proposed 25% discounted fare scheme:

    1) Only trains with monthly occupancy of less than 50% in the previous year are eligible for the 25% ticket discount scheme, Railways said.

    2) Discount to be offered can be up to 25% of the base fare.

    3) Other charges such as reservation fee, superfast charge, GST, etc., will be applied separately.

    4) Discount can be given for the first leg and/or last leg of journey and/or intermediate sections and/or end to end journey.

    5) Passengers will also get the provision to make catering optional with the discounted fare.

    6) The Railways' new 25% discounted ticket fare can be for the full year, part of the year or month wise or seasonal or for weekdays/weekend.

    7) Railways has directed all zonal authorities to review the occupancy of all trains with Chair Car and Executive Class seating accommodation by the 30th of September 2019 and take suitable action.

    8)This new discounted ticket scheme is aimed at improving occupancy and earnings, railways said.

    9) It is further decided that the existing discounted scheme in following trains shall continue as per the existing discounted principles.

    10) ) The 25% discount scheme will not be applicable on these trains which already are covered under existing discounted scheme:

    12007/12008 Chennai Central-Mysuru Shatabdi Express over Benguluru-Mysuru-Bengaluru section

    12010 Ahemdabad-Mumbai Centra Shatabdi train over Ahemdabad-Vadodara section

    12042 New Jalpaiguri-Horah Shatabdi Express over Jalpaiguri-Malda town section

    In another development, the Control Office Application (COA) system designed by Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has begun real-time monitoring of over 700 trains, fitted with GPS (Global Positioning System). The system will help track movement of trains even between two stations.
