Railways launches onboard shopping; shop in trains like you do in flights

Passengers can use digital payment for buying goods

    New Delhi: Indian Railways on Thursday introduced on-board shopping in train for passengers travelling in the Ahmedabad-Mumbai Karnavati Express.

    The services will start from Thursday and passengers can enjoy it on both the directions of the train.

    "This will give opportunity to passengers to buy FMCG products of daily need while commuting," the railways said.

    The Ministry of Railways also tweeted the about the new service.

    Passengers can buy cosmetics, stationery and other items on some trains on MRP. Among others, household products, oral care, skincare, haircare products, cosmetics, health-related items, paper products, confectionery, stationery products and other will be available and sold as per their maximum retail price, the Indian Railways said.

    Apart from cash payment mode, passengers travelling in the train and buying goods can make payment through credit cards, debit cards, Google Pay and Paytm.

    The double-decker Karnavati Express travels from Ahmedabad to Mumbai Central and vice-versa.

    Last year, a senior railway officer had said Mumbai division of Western Railway was awarded the contract for on board shopping for passengers in 16 mail and express trains for a period of five years to a private player who will have the license to sell household products and beauty products among others.

    The contract was given for five years at a cost of 3.5 crore, according to a PTI report.

    “A catalogue will be circulated among passengers from which they can choose what they want to buy when the cart circulates. We have prohibited any loud promotional activity for the sale of such goods," said the official. Initially, the shopping service will be introduced in two trains in the first phase and subsequently two trains will be added in every phase.
